Can I get opinons please on which is the better deal

Specialised Roubaix with Tiagra groupset with road shoes and clipless pedals thrown in for 1800 or

a Giant carbon composite bike (not the racing geometry TCR version) with SRam groupsetand pedals and shoes thrown in for 1760.

The bike will not be used for racing but just training rides, sportives, charity cycles etc and comfort i.e the relaxed geometry is the important consideration for me. Opinions appreciated

Oh yeah both are brand new and will be brought with cash (not btw scheme)

I'd say part of the lack of response is down to the lack of detail in the question. I don't know much about either bike, but it might help if there were some more details on the groupset, wheels, etc. My guess is you're comparing these bikes (hopefully someone will have some thoughts on the specifics):

    Giant Defy Composite 2
    SRAM Apex
    Giant P-R2 wheels

    Specialized Roubaix Compact
    Shimano Tiagra
    DT Axis 2.0 wheels

Neither both are very expensive for what you are getting with much better deals on bikes like Cube / Canyon / Planet-X to name a few.

For that money you'd be expecting 105 at a minimum:

    http://www.canyon.com/_en/roadbikes/bike.html?b=2505

Unless you've already made up your mind on them two have a search on the forum as I'm sure there was a thread recently on bikes for approx 2000 with a load of options for that price.

In my opinion the two you've mentioned have poor spec for the money.

    Yes there the 2 bikes.

Could the boardman team comp pro be changed to be more relaxed due to its racing geometry and if so would this mean budeting for extra parts and the cost of a bike mechanic aswell because I would not have a clue how to do it

Not a good idea, it'll look funny and probably handle oddly. Buy a bike that fits.

Relaxed geometry generally just means a longer headtube (relative to the frame size). If you are e.g. between two frame sizes then buying the larger will give you a more relaxed geometry than the smaller.

If you look at different bikes compare the head tube length to see how they'll compare. Remember you can usually fit up to about 40mm of spacers to raise the stem and you can also flip the stem to get additional height.

Planet x rt 57 is very comfortable but it's gone back uP to 2 k from 1700, fantastic bike though for what you want to use it for, and you'll never want to upgrade the frame. Maybe they'll still do one at the lower price. Planet x Ireland athlone.

Thanks for the info. I am 6ft so I presume if i went with say the boardman team carbon I would have to take the extra large size to make it more relaxed and a size 58cm frame in other makes

    I don't know!

It depends on the geometry of the particular frame. Halfords don't list the geometries of the Boardman bikes on their website.

I would agree with others above that for that sort of money I would want a carbon frame and 105 or Ultegra groupset. Dolan bikes are very good, great value and fully customisable e.g. this Hercules.

Another option is the Planet X RT-57, it has a fairly relaxed geometry, but is full carbon and has SRAM Rival http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CBPXRT57RIV/planet_x_rt_57_sram_rival_road_bike

Personally I think the Specialised is the better of the two. The frame is better and would be a good base to upgrade.
TBH at this price I'd expect better compoents (105 at least ) and think both look a bit expensive..

(Ps was dying to be the first to suggest a planet x but was well beaten to it ;))

At that sort of money, I'd be wanting a long test ride on both before deciding which to buy. Pick a varied route with bumpy bits, long flat sections, a few climbs etc. and see which feels the best.
