Hi there has anyone any advice or had the same experience.

I sold an item online and sent to by normal post to Modenna Italy on the 18th of may and it has still not be delivered.

Italy had a bad earthquake a few weeks ago so i don't know if that's effecting it, also i put my Return address on the back of the package. so can it still get lost in the mail ?

the person is getting annoyed and thinks i done him out of his money and i don't want to get a bad rep on papal for this any ideas what i can do ?

In the 20+ years I've been mailing stuff Italy is a country when even using registered mail items seem to not make it unfortunately, though to be fair the registered service has improved in recent years but normal mail is still prone to "missing" packages....you can add Spain, Greece and Russia to the list also :)

To be honest anybody selling regularly should dispatch the goods by registered post or via courier, so there is traceability. I think, as this was sent normal post, that you need to reissue the goods or refund the customer at this stage.

My cousin sells on ebay and Italy is a no no, too much stuff goes missing to there even if registered, and the onus is on the seller to recoup the loss (if you contact an post they may help, although they'll argue they did their side of the deal by proving it got to Italy so you may get nothing even if you registered it)

I wouldn't give them the choice to be honest. Just list the item as being dispatched as registered mail only.

Italy is a nightmare to post to. Lots of things seem to get lost there.

Then it's no deal; as you will be responsible for the delivery of the goods.

Also, I think you may refund him now, as waiting a couple of more weeks is very poor service when it has already been almost 4 weeks - not a good reputation to get on Paypal. The item will most likely never be returned to you.

Italy is a no go registered or not. If its registered you can request proof of signature from An post but by the time that arrives the PayPal case will be lost and you won't be able to appeal.

If you go to 17track.net and enter your tracking number, then select destination country Italy there's an update from the 11th of may, I can't copy the text over and it's in Italian but I'm hazarding a guess it says the package was received in the central post office in italy

I use this site in work its quite good http://www.track-trace.com/post unfrotunatly does not seem to cover Italy.

Dutch post is quite bad too. The problem is when one post ofice passes to another some don't follow through as well as other. I would only use the like of DHL or FED EX if leaving IRL/UK.

Personally, I would always use insured/recorded post. I build that into the price of postage up front, so if someone doesn't want to pay, they don't bid.

You will probably have to bear this one yourself, as the buyer can file an undelivered dispute with paypal, and get a refund. If you can't provide a tracking reference, paypal will just issue the refund.

Treat this as a learning experience, and never ship untracked.

Thanks - I.ve checked that and it looks like the item arrived at sorting office in Italy.

The buyer has'nt contacted me , so I can presume the package was delivered .

However , I think it proves that even registered post is not worthwhile sending to Italy .

It does give you some defence against people filing fake undelivered reports against you, though.

I post regularly to Italy and receive from there on a monthly basis (from my brother). Never had a parcel go missing.
Might be late as hell, but it eventually gets there. I normally give about 14 days before I start querying. That does not mean there isn't any "pilfering"....
Biggest problem with Italian mail (parcels, packets), is that EVERYHING must be inspected by the Guardia Di Finanza (financial police/customs), in order to append taxes/charges. That slows things down considerably.

In addition to that, posting to major cities is fairly painless. If the letter/package needs to goto a smaller town or a suburb that has its own post office, then the time it takes to be delivered is ENTIRELY up to the efficiency of that specific post office as each post office collects /delivers individually to/from the central hub.
If I send to/from the post office in Cento (Bologna), then the bloody stuff lies there for days before they get of their arses and move it along. If I post to/from the post office in Alberone (suburb of Cento) about 6km away, mail gets moved every 6 hrs. Go figure....

You also need to be aware unless the post box is fully accessible, the postman will not enter premises to deliver or to drop the notification. They will try to deliver the next day and if the situation is still the same, the parcel will be kept for 14 days at the local post office and eventually sent back (by the slowest possible route). No further attempts will be made to deliver.
Things you can do to "speed up" process:-
    - make sure your declaration forms are 100% correct. Marking it as a 'gift' is a no-no.
    - make sure the post code is correct. If its wrong, inter-office transfers take a lifetime.
    - make sure the package is securely wrapped.
    - if you prefer 'peace of mind', send it registered with requirement for a signature and a return confirmation (raccomandata con ricevuta di ritorno). That ensures that the package is fully tracked. A signature and ID document is required by the addressee before they will release the parcel. You will get a return card with the details of who signed for the package. It costs quite a bit more, but its safe.
