It's really annoying me but ever since I got my Android Sony Ericsson, I haven't been able to get at Android Market. I get as far as the Account Setup and it either tells my details are wrong or, when I make sure they're right, it says it can't connect and tells me to "Connect to WiFi". "Can't connect to data server" or something similar. I've tried a few different things now. Does anyone know how I can solve this problem?

You need a data connection or wi-fi connection to get on the android market. You sure your google account details are correct? Without an account set up you won't get onto it.

My google account details are correct, I've even set up two new google acounts just to make sure.

And it's not even saying I need to connect to Wifi anymore, it's just saying

    "Can't connect to data server"

Do you have Google 2 Step verification in use out of interest? If you do you need to make an app specific password for Android

Don't have it so ;) . Its an extra verification step for gmail where if your logging in to Gmail from another location you must use a code generated by the google authenticator app on your phone,

Well I can't log into Gmail either. Something about Sync, I tried it when I was doing another work around

If all fails try a factory reset on your phone so it thinks its starting for the first time! Might do the trick! Other than that I don't know!

Everything google related should be accessible once your details are right. This should include your gmail, android market, youtube, google+ or whatever else. Once I log in with my details my gmail does also! One user name and password should allow you access to everything!

I've been trying to avoid that because I don't want to go to the effort of filling in all my numbers again, but it's looking like thats my last option

It does sound to me like connectivity problems, try reconfiguring the wifi network (assuming your using wifi) and see if it helps, it can happen that you put the security code in incorrectly and then the network won't connect

I have the same problem for months. Drove me nuts then i just gave up.
whenever you try log in you get a message saying:
your phone needs to communicate with google servers to setup your account. this may take up to five minutes.

    then you get the:
"can't establish a reliable data connection to the server" error.

Theres loads of blogs on the issue all over the net. Ive tried all of them but none of them worked for me. (htc desire z). hard resetting the phone, youtube trick etc.. none worked for me. now i got a fancy looking "not so smart phone". mobile phone network couldnt help me either all they know about is apn settings.

What i think the problem is, is the hosts file in etc/hosts. I think its got an old ip address that doesnt work anymore. if i try ping it nothing happens. Problem is i cant update the host file to one of the new ones. wont let me..

You should (hopefully) be able to backup your contacts from the menu in contacts to a memory card, if you do end up having to reset the phone. Maybe taking a copy onto PC if possible to be safe. Re-importing them will save you having to key all in again.
Some websites suggest you should first connect your phone to your Google account over 3G ( but I don't remember having to do it that way myself )

Just copy all the numbers to the SIM before doing the factory reset.

Might be worth side installing the latest version of the Google apps so. You can find them as a clockwork mod flashable zip on cyanogen website.
Or at least the latest play store apk, which I'm sure you'll be able to find with a quick Google
