Hi my brother is starting a 1 year course in Community Healthcare (with Social Studies) FETAC level 5 and i was just wondering is there much work opportunity out there in this area, perferably in the area of working with people with intellectual disabilities. I heard there is a lack of male workers in this area. Thank you

Yes , it is true that it has been an area dominated by females ( similar to Primary teaching I suppose ).
The problem is that many if not all these positions are funded by the HSE which is cutting back across the board and support for those with Special Needs will likely suffer cuts - jobs may be difficult to find in the future.

Yes that is true also but i suppose if a job in that area should arise he would have an advantage in getting the job being a male.

Equality legislation does not permit gender favouritism so I would have my doubts about him being at an advantage.
