I’m heading on a RTW in August, route as follows:

    Mexico > Guate> Belize> Honduras> Nica< C Rica> Panama, over to Colombia> Maybe Equador, Peru, Boliva, Brazil, Argentina, Chile.
Onto NZ, OZ, then SE Asia for 2 months.

I will spend roughly 6 months in all of Latin America. I don't intend on going deep into the Amazon, and will probably stick to southern Brazil Iguazu-Rio areas. I'm trying to keep things flexible and decide where to visit based on time/who I meet etc. But mostly likely I'll be hitting all the usual hotspots! According to the CDC Malaria map, it looks as though I’m going to be spending about 5 months in Malaria zones (3-4 months in Latin America, then 2 months in Asia – red or yellow countries on the map). What is concerning me is the cost of Malerone or equivalent for 5-6 months, not to mention side effects!!

Can anyone advise me? Has anyone spent the same amount on time in Malaria zones??
Would it be wise to only get them for when I think I’ll be in the very high risk places, such as hiking/trekking in jungle-y regions like in panama, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Borneo???
Or should I bite the bullet and take them for the whole 5 months?

    Any advice is appreciated!

    Thanks.:)
