Vasectomised ferret

    Hi all,

I realise this is going to provide amusement to some of you not involved in the ferret world, but I'm trying to find a vasectomised male ferret to either buy or borrow.

My own vasectomised ferret was killed a few weeks ago and I now have 2 females in season and I while I do have an entire male I don't want to breed any more kits.

For those of you reading this with a quizzical look, female ferrets stay in season until they are mated and can be prone to infection and anaemia if left this way for a long time, therefore we keep a vasectomised hob to service them and take them out of season without breeding unwanted young.

Alternatively, if anyone has an adult male, I would be interested in buying one and having it vasectomised by my own vet.

Please PM if you can help.

Are you going to use the male to hunt?
If you go round to some rescue places they get ferrets in all the time and they neuter them when they come in a lot are house ferrets so if you just want a male to take them out of season you should give it a shot

    @ Dodderangler,

Thanks for the advice, hunting wouldn't be a main priority for him as I prefer working jills. If he does he does, if he doesn't it's not important.

When you say neutered, do they castrate them? If so, they would be no good to me, I still need him to do the job, just not with live ammunition.

    @ Transit 260,

    I'm in Westmeath.

Hi Pointer, I was recently in Mullingar pet hospital enquiring about ferrets and vasectomising a male and the girl said they had done a couple recently. You might try your look there. They might pass on your name ( worth a chance ). Nick

    Hi Scuttlebutt,

Small world, my hob that was killed was the first they ever done.

I made the same request myself on here a while ago for a vas hob Pointer but had no luck. I have a hob that i'm after getting vasectomised but can't find a vet that has done one before here in Cork, I have found a vet willing to have a go at it but wants to charge €150 to €200 to do it. In the UK the price is around half that and for a vet that has done a lot of them so I'm having a think about what to do. In the meantime I have had my jills jabbed to bring them out of season.

If the vet has never done a ferret before then they shouldn't charge you for it
Is there any college in cork that studies animals and stuff
I got my dog neutered in trinity for free to show students how to do it

    @ Ferreter,

You're a superstar, that's just what I needed to hear.

I had heard of the jill jab before but none of the vets had a clue what I was talking about. Now you've given me the medical name I should be sorted.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Ferreter,

I haven't done anything yet, I'll chat to the vet after the weekend and hopefully get sorted.

    Thanks for the advice.
