Recommendation for tyres

Hi All looking for advise re tyres. I need 5 tyres and I am getting quotes from €50 to €100 per tyre. The problem is as I have no idea about makes etc I feel like when I ring some places they are pulling the wool over my eyes. I have been quoted for 4 tyres Brand name RAPID Supposedly made by Pirelli for €60 each. That seems steep to me for an unbranded name. Then I got another quote for €70 per tyre in another place for KORMORON supposedly made by Michellin. I know if I spend nearer the €100 mark I will get the best tyres but as that is out of my budget range I was wondering if anyone out there can advise on types of tyres and places that are good value. For anyone that knows the industry I am looking for 195/65 r15!!! Any good advise welcome, any smarty pants please refrain from posting. Thanks:D

Was that Wicklow Tyre Services ? There is a customer reception area at the front of the building with hot beverages while you wait.

Hi guys...the guy in Shankhill was the one that said he could give me 4 Rapids ( supposedly Pirellis but cant find any info to substansiate it???) plus a spare for €300. I have tried to research the Rapids and can find nothing on them other than they are Chinese which I have heard are crap. The other place in Shankhill will do 5 tyres for €350 which are Koromon (Michellin). Another place in Loughlinstown said €350 for 5 and they would be GTs/Sportivas.....Is this the average price for a middle of the road tyre or is there cheaper? The cheaper ones seem to be total crap which is what I would except u get what you pay for but I want to be sure .

Some of the brands you mention are rubbish. Get a known brand, it will say it on the tyre, if it doesn't say the name on the tyre it isn't made by that company. If a guy says X tyre is made by another company he is talking sh*te. X tyre is made by X company. Get the most affordable Semperit, michellin, Perelli, Hankook, Nankang, Fulda, Goodyear, Dunlop, Firestone, Kumho, Vredestien, Avon you can. Remember it's all that's between you and the road. It is important.

    Buy cheap buy twice.
I bought tyres recently in Wicklow Tyres in Kilcoole and found them very helpful. They even drove in to Bray to change a wheel that i found hard to get off.I couldnt recommend them highly enough.:D

Don't buy those - in the wet they'll kill you, they almost did me in. Useless rubbish.

I am in the trade and can verify Kormoran as an excellrnt tyre and well priced. You're in luck with the size you require. it's the markets second most common therefore competititive. There are good deals on Michelin at the moment with a €25 fuel voucher. And they are the best. Forget Rapid or a host of the other brands named above. As a rule of thumb premium are
    Michelin, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Goodyear. Dunlop,Continental
    Mid range are
    Hankook, Firestone,Kumho, Toyo,Semperit,Uniroyal,
Budget are everything else. Although I would say that Kormoran is made to fit a market niche pricepoint by Michelin and is very good for the money.
Wicklow Tyres is an excellent depot and has accounts with most. Dont listen to dealewrs pushing stuff you've never heard of.
I dont work for Wicklow Tyres BTW

There's a massive wholesale tyre place in Kilcoole - you all have seen their vans - Renew Tyres. Here's the deal, if you can just get the tyres and fit them yourself, you're laughin' but most of us don't have the gear for fitting tyres! My little secret: go to the Motor Body workshop in Kilcoole and they'll supply and fit them. Best price I've ever achieved is through them, even with a choice of the known brands. :)

Yep they will and i suppose charge €50 for doing so. If the car requires tracking they wont be able to do it. The wholesaler buys at the same deal as the local specialist and sells without the fitting charge(€50) but obviously takes a margin. You end up doing two calls instead of one. Not a good way to buy at all.

Well then that's not wholesale. Don't underestimate the ability of a local crash repairs!

I dont underestimate them at all. Do they balance the tyres? Do they have a balancer? Where do they put your waste tyres? But dont take my word for it. Get a quote on a brand/ size like for like with say Wicklow tyres and see if you're better off. And ask the environmental question. What are you doing with my waste?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

What about for the larger non competitive sizes. I'm looking for 2 x 255/55R18. Do the same good names for smaller tyres apply to the larger ones also?
