I'd been recommended this show a few times and finally got around to watching it and WOW it is incredible. There are 5 seasons and we're only on about episode 9 of the first and completely hooked.

My fave TV shows ever are The West Wing, The Office (UK), The Wire, Entourage, Band of Brothers, Firefly and this show is easily up there with them.

Would recommend for people to give it a chance as it really is an unknown gem.

great show, the 2nd season dips in quality a bit but stick with it, the fifth season is brilliant.

Great show, only finished it last week. There's talk of a new movie coming too with the cast of the TV show so hopefully it gets off the ground.

I made it 3 episodes into Season 1 and gave up

Im watching the sky atlantic pace so nearing the end of season one. I really like it, hard to see how they get five seasons out of it but ill definitely be sticking with it.

Friday Night Lights is absolutely brilliant, if you liked the movie or like films like remember the titans etc, not the any given sunday type american football stuff. Very well written, the acting is very good also and it is brilliantly paced.

All in all it is one of the better tv shows I have ever seen, my favorites would have included The Sopranos, The Wire, Entourage etc

    This is right up there

Yeah its a very enjoyable show.

Excellent show. I'm winding my way through Season 4 right now. At this rate they could have made 10 seasons and I'd still have kept watching. Season 2 was a bit meh but it was still better than most seasons of most other shows.

Wouldnt hold my breath on the movie unfortunately, Tim Riggins has said he aint interested (I think the quote was "I'm happy the way I left it") and financing is an issue.

Real pity though, is easily in my top 10 series ever (and I havent even finished season 5 yet :D)

Those looking for a sort of FNL fix should have a look at Battleship. I noticed last night it's got Riggins and Landry in the cast!

Thing is both his big breaks have bombed at the box office so id say he might not get a third chance at leading a big film. You'd be surprised how tempting a Friday night lights film will look for the guy if the decent offers dry up.

I made it to 18 episodes before I realised it's a glorified soap opera.

Youve actually perfectly verbalised how I feel about this show. Im near enough to the end of the first season (got to watching it on netflix) and couldnt figure what wasnt working for me.

Dont get me wrong, its good, and the acting in most cases is excellent but I cant seem to get completely stuck into it.

I agree with you on the 10 seasons part, but really one of the main reasons I love the show so much is because of the ending. They ended it perfectly.

It's also worth checking out some behind the scenes stuff on youtube. They filmed it documentary style with just 3 cameras and there also was a lot of improv with lines which was kinda cool.

its one of the few US shows to end perfectly, 5 seasons, a proper story arc, every character has some sort of journey and it doesnt outstay its welcome

On Season 1. really liking it so far.

Just finished Season 5 on sky atlantic. One of those shows I'd watch again. Loved every minute of it. Right up there with the wire,

Watched this on Sky Atlantic as well. Great series. Found out after the finale that we got an edited version when I read a review that mentioned
    an appearance from Landry
So the full episode was over an hour long without ads.

One thing about the final season that I found pointless was
the introduction of that basketball player. He didn't do much

Watch season 2 but then try to pretend that everything that happened was a dream or something. It'll make the last three (brilliant) seasons more enjoyable.

Finished it about three weeks ago, still having withdrawal symptoms. What a fantastic show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

Tell you what I would have preferred as an ending:
I think it would have been better to have Eric's job offer on the last episode after he had agreed to go with Tammy because the Lions were gone and he told them to go screw themselves over sacking him the the couple of seasons before hand. It just didn't sit well with me that it was never even mentioned.

I really liked it as a show though, I wouldn't hold it up to the wire/breaking bad but It didn't really have a dip in quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,906 ✭✭✭SarahBM

Just finished S1!!! OMFG it was brilliant!! Can't wait to get S2!!!
I love Tyra! My fav character_

Great show. It had pretty much everything - drama, humour, good characters and was enjoyable even if you hadn't a clue about football, but let's be honest, it was never really about that. I don't care whether it's tagged as soap opera - you invest in the characters, which is a positive sign for any show.

Season 4 and 5 actresses who played Jess and Becky are in the latest seasons of True Blood and Dexter respectively.

    In the case of Dexter
Becky finally got the job along the lines of what she wanted: topless waitress

Any other TV series out there like this. Loved the series. Petty they didn't do a spin off to see the college team

Home & Away with a bit of American Football thrown in, awful.

I was thinking today that they should have done like a 3 or 4 part special or something a few years later
where everyone comes back to Dillon for Julie and Matt's wedding. Coach will have gotten a job with a college team, Street is a big time agent with Smash Williams on the books. Im not sure what would have happened to Landry, I can see Tyra being a high school guidance councillor just like Mrs T. who knows?

I have to say there are less than a hand full of shows where I think I have become THAT invested in a group of characters. They were all so real, not like on some shows where you have the typical good guy and the typical bad guy. Take Coach Taylor for example. All round goodguy and all american hero, right?
WRONG! There were some times when I was just like "you a such a b*****d".
This show was one of the few character driven shows out there. The stories came from the characters and not the other way around, which I feel can be the downfall of so many shows these days.
Im starting to think that there are just too many shows around now. Quality, not quantity as they say.

As for shows around like this, I dont think there are many. The West Wing has to be on the same level. Brothers and Sisters is another very character driven show which I loved. I loved One Tree Hill too, but I would consider that a bit more "girly" if you'll forgive the expression.

Do I have to use spoiler tags? I really want to talk about the show, and none of my friends watch it (yet).

Caprica is a great drama, it came out too soon after BSG and people expected the same.
I liked it allot - more so when i re watched it because i wasent waiting week to week

There was a wonderful essay a number of years ago by Lorrie Moore for the New York Review of books about Friday Night Lights and remember it had the line, talking bout the Taylors - "the finest representation of middle-class marriage in popular culture."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,906 ✭✭✭SarahBM

Ya I'd love to read the book. I loved the Taylor's. I mean, they were normal. They wernt goodie goodie, but they wernt completely disfunctional either. Some shows, its either one extreme or the other.
