    Hi all,

just wondering if i was to put in electric gates which are approx 400Meters from the house what size electrical cable should i install???

i presume an armoured cable will be OK to direct bury in the ground with no duct around it?? Obviously we will be careful with the backfill material so as not to damage the cable.;)

make sure you put in a PolyPoly cable to run controls/intercom - ensure it has more strands than you need at the mo as in future you might want CCTV or gate/driveway lights (which could be switched at low volatage with a relay at the gate or something else and you will be mad at you self for not having the strands available to do this

also for that lenght would suggest a couple of mid way junction boxes so again if you want lights etc you can take a feed off the cable

I would always advise clients to duct the cable as it allows for future alterations ithout the need to dig up the ground again. In terms of the size of cable I cant help on that front

I have gates at 350 mtrs . I have 6sq swa in duct 2'' black for main supply and cable also in duct for future lighting when funds allow.Poly cable and co-axial also in separate duct for switching and cctv .Used ajs for access every 50 mtrs .Distance means we use a gsm system for controls/intercom.
Elecrical contractor wanted to use 10 sq , electrical super at work who has degree in elec engineering maintained 4sq was ample and i was throwing my money away. He used voltage drop charts .
Ducting 700 mtrs 2'' black duct . 7 AJs . 2 lenghts 12'' storm pipe for lamp post conc forms .1400 mtr plus 6mm rope . Digger hire 6 hrs . 750 kg cement 5 tonne sand. 2k...2.5k add cable cost , big difference between 4sq and 10sq.
depends on whether you want to power tools etc at site of gates.
Now you are ready to start the gates
Best of luck a lot of work ahead
