GUI and course standards

Just wondering if the GUI has any rules regarding minimum standards for courses. When applying for GUI affiliation, is the standard, layout and condition of the course subject to inspection? Is there any monitoring conducted by the GUI?
The reason I ask is that I played away in a GUI inter club comp at the weekend and the course we played on was a disgrace, a total joke.

They do inspect a course before they will give it a SSS but as far as i know there is no yearly inspection.

It’s not clear, but you seem to be referring to the condition / presentation of the course rather than course changes or other issues that would impact on the holding of competitions.

There are regulations covering “formal” aspects of the Golf Course, such as course measurement (broader than measurement alone), rather than course condition and these are contained in the CONGU UHS Manual (http://www.gui.ie/handicap-manual/congu_2012_correct-pdf.aspx):

If you take a quick look at the UHS Manual, for example, you will see that clause 4 covers rights and responsibilities of the Union (i.e. the GUI) and clause 6 the responsibilities of the Affiliated Club.

There are also rules as regards teeing ground, etc., covered in the Rules of Golf.

However, I would think that issues such as course condition / presentation (although there are recommendations on the R&A site) would be left to market forces – clubs that don’t keep pay attention to these matters will ultimately suffer loss of green fees and members.

That being said, if you want to take this issue further, you could ask your match & handicap secretary to raise it with either the club or the GUI.

Seeing as even the worst conditioned courses of today are about the same standard as the best conditioned courses of about 30 years ago, I think that providing any minimum acceptable presentation / conditioning standard would be a huge step in the wrong direction.

We have become pampered in my opinion.
