Something tells me the Maguire twins will be long gone from the amateur ranks by 2016, but a big congratulations to Dun Laoghaire on being selected to host the Curtis Cup. A great honour for a young course.

    I don't believe it.

No sooner have I posted something about amateur golf remaining on the links that I now notice that Ireland has once again thrown up another non-descript parkland venue for a major golf tournament.

I quite like the course but we really don't know what side our bread is buttered on.

    Great news:

they need the business and its a great course(s) with even better facilities.

they'll get little business from hosting this.....in fact, they will definitely lose money on this.

hands up who knew the curtis cup was on last weekend in Nairn? exactly.....

They won't make money from the tournament, they will however from the publicity and tourism after. Similar to how druids glen, the k club etc all did. albeit won't be as big as what they got due to the tournament it will be big none the less.

also because its being hosted here, failte ireland will plug it for internal tourism.

I thought the conclusion was that there was little or no subsequent dividend for the K Club? And that was with the Ryder Cup. On a fine course. Dun Laoghaire needs 30 years before it could be considered 'complete'. And even then, while a fine course for the average golfer, will still be nothing remarkable. There must be 50 courses better than it in Ireland without even debate. What are the chances they got the Curtis Cup because no one else really wants it anyway?

I thought I was a cynic but this thread makes me look wide eyed.

Dun Laoighire's standard green fee is 70€. I wouldn't pay that sort of money without a commendation of sorts. The Curtis Cup is the type of commendation they need.

Dun Laoghaire can afford to host the event. Not sure how many other courses could say that. The structure of their move has left a mountain of money in their coffers that they can't distribute to their members.

yea they've a few million in the bank that they can't use to maintain the course or support the clubhouse. they have to spend it on a capital investment and this would be one such investment.

    they're also building another 9
