Excuse my ignorance here but, while watching reeling in the years I saw something different. I thought you could only kick over the bar after a try.
But Ireland kicked over the bar from play ? Why bother breaking yer neck getting a try when you can just lash it over the bar from play.
    Explain Please:confused:

You can kick it over the ball from wherever you want, almost whenever You want. It's worth 3 points. Tries however are worth more, potentially 7 points.

Ahh But I have seen a team losing by a point with 3 mins to go and they never try a kick over the bar ?
    Answer me that then ?

It is quite a difficult thing to pull off so in that case they either didn't have someone who was capable of it or they never managed to egt the ball to someone who could do it in a position where they could attempt it

No idea what that match was, but scenarios like that happen all the time and the team kicks it over to win

You have to drop-kick it. It's a bit tricky.

It's called a drop goal but you don't kick the ball over like in gaelic football. You drop the ball and after it bounces on the ground you kick it. It's a tricky skill and takes about 3 seconds to pull off so it's often hard to do in open play because defenders have time to rush up and charge down the kick. The kicker will usually stand back further than usual (called dropping back into the pocket) when he intends to go for a drop goal. It's usually only done when the kicker is less than 30 yards from the line and when there's no better option, it's usually better to keep plugging for a try which usually results in 7 points as opposed to 3 for a drop goal. Check out Ronan o' Gara's drop goal against Northampton last year and you'll see the point. Hope that clears it up ;)
