Hi can anyone help me with this as I don't have an owners manual

I recently purchased a 03 320d se and I keep getting an orange oil light displaying randomly even after the red ignition one goes out

low on oil. if there is no leak, you need to top it up.

The orange oil light indicates that you are low on oil, if however it stays on for about 20 seconds after you start the car and then goes out, and you confirmed the oil is ok, then the oil level sensor itself is faulty. its a common fault and it coming on for 20 seconds is a way of telling you. I have it on mine, and just rely on checking the oil regularly, as to fix it you have to drain the oil and the job could cost 150 or so. There are cheap sensors on ebay but these are known to leak.

Yep was the same on mine, the oil level was fine, but the orange light came on for about 15 seconds after starting the engine.

Oil level sensor it was. Was quoted €130 from BMW for a genuine one (I heard the Ebay spurious jobbies don't have great seals so I'd avoid).

It's not essential at all, mine passed an NCT with it, but if you do it, just fit at your next oil change, simple job.
