Have €4-5k to spend on a second hand car, would like a small bit of comfort if possible.

Will be doing about 40,000 kms a year.

Reliability and low running costs are pretty much essential.

However, car MUST be 1.6L or higher.

    Needs to have 5 doors.

Anyone recommend a make and model of car based on above spec?

    Many thanks!

Why must it be a 1.6 or higher is this for expenses, ? Because engine size is beginning to become irrelevant with vw 1.4 tsi replacing some 2.0 ltr engines and ford new 1 ltr replacing 1.8 and 1.6 engines, plus toyotas 1.5 ltr Prius drives like a 2.0 yet gives 50 to 55 real world mpg ?

Pug 406 2.0 diesel. Around 1-2k and keep the rest for drugs, drinks and woman.

Rover 75 or MGZT Diesel 04-05 can be got well within budget. BMW 2.0d engine lot of car for the money. Lots of 75's around top of the range connie's have all the toys, MG ZT's not as common but more sporty version of the same car.

I'm doing 30,000km per year, mostly motorway mileage, in one of these:

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volvo/S40/1.8-SE-0/7813391742208600/advert?channel=CARS

It's comfortable. Slightly higher running costs than my last car, a 1.4 focus, the most significant increase being in the cost of tyres due to a less common wheel size. 20,000km service intervals which is ok.

Fuel consumption is good if you behave yourself. But I chew through 25L doing Dublin to Cork regularly tho - 9.5-10L/100km @ 140km/h. Probably getting 7.0L/100km behaving on daily commute (20%:20%:40%:20% city:R-road:M50:N road), to 7.5L/100km pushing myself about a bit.

So is it 1.6, higher than 1.6 or what, your other thread suggests you want to stick with 1.6?

1.6 or higher but preferable as close to 1.6 as possible. Can't be lower than 1.6 though.

What do folk think of this car?

It says the engine size is 1560, is that a 1.6 or a 1.5?
