Fergie 35 problem

I had an incident last week with my lovely old fregie 35 and i would like to understand what might have caused it.

While towing my tipping trailer down hill, it coughed and spluttered, thought it was out of diesel, the 'revved' like a foot hard in accelerator pedal - all on its own. I pulled fuel stop, nothing happened, couldn't knock it out of gear and had smoke! Chose to bail out as couldn't stop and dare not try and turn it on the hill..

Any ideas what has caused this? Someone said secondary fuel supply caused by oil filled air intake - I'd really like to understand what happened..

    Many thanks

I think the grey 35 still had the vacuum fuel pump set-up. If you lose the vacuum pressure from the air intake pipe the engine will race as you lose the governor on the diesel pump. Had this happen with a 20 diesel.
There may be a pipe going from the top of the diesel pump across to the bottom of the air intake valve. Check for loose/cracked connections.
If in doubt get the pump checked. Bear in mind a recon on a diesel pump like that will be upwards of €250

The Ferguson 35x had an injection pump not governed by a vacuum . if you pulled the stop rod and i didn't stop id Saul there's dirt in the pump interfering with the meeting rod and the stop rod. pop the top cap off the inspector pump, remove the stop rod and the throttle rod, and check for dirt. Let us know how you got on

Whoever told you about the secondary fuel source was probably right.
35s have an oil filled air filter.
So what probably happened was oil from the air filter got into the inlet manifold and was then sucked into the engine. As diesel is basically oil the engine will run the oil from the air filter but because the the supply is not regulated the engine revs out of control and cant be turned off until it runs out of oil to burn . The only way to stop a run away engine is to try to stall it.

Hope this makes sense to you. If you understand how a compression ignition(diesel) engine works its easy enough to grasp if not i've probably confused you more.

    +1 my first thought also.

Also check oil level make sure its not too high and that it doesn't smell like diesel.

Thanks very much for your responses. That makes sense..

My tractor man has now had a brief look at her, and says the oil intake has diesel in it... ?? Not sure how or why..

He will be taking her away to strip her down and mend - pity he cant do the same for me! ;);)
