Is Facebook on the way out?

Did old Zuckers float at the right time?

I am not a user, never have been. Couldn't see the appeal in it, with false friends and telling the world everything you thought.

I now see some people I know losing interest in it, and openly moaning about it.

Is this the beginning of the end?

I find it really funny how some people give out about how much information they post on Facebook, there was one user in particular who was giving out non stop about it but while browsing through the Accomadation... forum the user had posted how much rent they were paying, what type of house they were renting, what county and area they were living in and the bills they were paying and how much they were paying for each bill.

I stopped using it a while back so its lost its appeal for a lot of people.

It's opened my eyes to how many idiots I have in my friends list. People who I thought were ok people (when my interaction with them is limited) I have now discovered to:

    - be attention seekers. Constant cryptic threads hoping people will ask them if they're ok etc
    - live boring lives, which they need to tell everyone about. "ice cold glass of coke, bag of tayto and a fag - does life get any better than this?"
    - they watch a lot of terrible crap on Netflix that we all need to know about.
    - they check in everywhere.

And now, to make it worse, I now see when they post on comments involving other idiots that are not even in my friends list.

I have some business pages that i admin and if it wasn't for these, I'd deactivate and set fire to it.

Facebook has allowed me to recognise when a friend is contemplating suicide.

..a friend recently committed suicide and from looking at their facebook page it was obvious they were depressed and were looking for attention/help... I just didn't see it (like all the other "friends" on facebook) .... people are sometimes not able to read between the lines.

Facebook and other online resources have allowed me to be more aware of depression (in facebook statuses) and has helped me to understand that sometimes people (no matter how many virtual friends they have) ... simply want to talk to someone.

If I went by this I'd have half my friends list on suicide watch. They all want to sound depressed to seek attention. In reality the worst thing that's happening to some of them is that work is making them go to Germany for a week...or they can't go out this weekend....or "working for the match on Sunday FML"

In the long run, everything is on the way out. The IPO was pretty much a cash-in by private holders of the shares, including banks & venture capitalists as well as Facebook insiders like Zuckerberg. So they kept bumping up the IPO share price to totally unrealistic levels, suckers who bought the hype lost money buying at that price, and now it's heading down to a more sensible level.

Like anything "social", I think Facebook is made by its users. There was a certain exclusivity at first, but now that's gone, and now everyone thinks they have to be "on Facebook". As a way of connecting people, I think it will survive as email has survived, but it won't continue to be an "internet destination" forever, I think.

For example: I'm job-hunting at the moment, and I don't see any employers using Facebook for recruitment at all. LinkedIn, yes, but with Facebook it's just marketing i.e. they're on Facebook because potential customers are on Facebook. It has no more relevance to business than that.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I think the shar price was way too high on the initial offereing, so it will keep dropping until it's at a realistic price. Doesn't necessarily mean that Facebook is on the way out, but was just over valued. I'm sure there are alot of p*ssed off shareholders out there.

Personally, I don't see why anyone would want to buy shares in a company that doesn't produce anything tangible.

I'm not on facebook, and never will be after this post. I listen to my kids ( 13yo and 15yo ) and OH going on about it, and what About To Be Banned says here is spot on - the above post is the best laugh I had all day.

If I WAS on facebook I'd follow you AboutToBeBanned ( or whatever you do on Facebook ):):):)

I think it is for the people who have used it for years, I predict a 'bebo' situation happening.

As facebook gets more invasive, and develops features that don't really help the user (eg sharing a photo if you've liked it, the facebook.com email address debacle etc) then I do think people will move away. I've had 2 friends in the last week shut up shop and I'm considering so myself.

I'd like to say G+ is where they will go but I don't think so, theres a perception that its a wasteland (mines is) which will stop people from investing unless there is a direct import feature from facebook (e.g. add your facebook friends from G+, import your photos, information, apps etc). I think twitter stands to be the only one to truly benefit as it's use amongst my friends and colleagues has increased massively over the last year.

Overall, I don't think Facebook will die, I think it's demographic will shift much younger and older leaving the middle-ground on G+, Twitter and other social networks. Personally I see a fragmented future away from Facebook with updates on Twitter, events / apps on G+, detailed 'about you' on Linked in and photos on Instagram (hopefully without filters all the time).

I joined g+ in believing google's promotion material that it would be markedly different as a social site from facebook. Outcome? Google version of facebook. About 60% of g+ user's have a link to their facebook site on Google+. After 2 months I left Google+.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,779 ✭✭✭dmcg90

Theres only going to be a certain amount of types of social networking sites

    - Subject eg food
    - News/Life eg Twitter, G+
    - Life - Facebook, G+
    - Creative - Tumblr

I cant see many more types popping up offering something similar but different to Facebook. Even Path is just Facebook with a friend limit.

Just to let everyone know, the same tell-tale signs are taking over in Twitter - someone posted that they bought a new roller - and posted a picture of a paint roller.

I mean why not get a life and stop spending all your time posting picture of crap to imaginary friends on Twitter. I predict Twitter will go the same way as Facebook, only quicker.

Already people are selling followers on Twitter, just like people sell 'likes' on Facebook.
