Some background info first! 30yr old female, 5"4 and 11stone in weight. I eat ok but allow myself to eat what a little of what I like (within reason). I need to lose about 1.5stone.

I took my first boxing class this week. It was one hour solid moving and I found it incredibly tough but kind of enjoyable!. Can't move my wrists and arms today with the pain though! Is this something that gets easier with perseverance and how good is it as a workout for general fitness and weight loss? Thanks for advice :)

To lose weight it is probably more important to pay more attention to your diet, than to just exercise. From being in and out of plenty of gyms over the years, I know plenty of people who trained twice daily and were significantly overweight, yet never shed more than a few pounds. Reason being that they weren't committed on the diet side of things and would just eat a tonne of kcals when they got home.

So, if you want to lose weight I'd suggest reading the stickies, figuring out what your kcal intake should be and then tracking it on www.myfitnesspal.com or something similar just to see whether you're under/over eating etc.

With regards to exercise, it's great that you've found something that you enjoy:) That means it will keep you motivated to keep going. Boxing is great for fitness and is good for weightloss too if accompanied by a good diet. As regards the wrists and arms, yup arms could be tired/sore after an upper body workout but the sore wrists could be down to technique not being up to scratch. Ask your instructor to take a look at you next week just to make sure that isnt the case!!

    Hope that helps:)

Thanks a million. I know I need to try harder with my diet. I do use my fitness pal so I had an awareness of the problematic foods. Weekdays tend to be ok but weekends are a disaster! Thanks for advice re boxing, I'll try another night and if the same pains persist I'll have a chat with the instructor. Shall report back on my weight loss (I hope) ;)

Out of interest, where are you doing the boxing?

I do boxing along with kettlebells bootcamp and running ( I mix it up depending on my mood and the weather)

First few times I did boxing my arms/shoulders were killing me, but I had exactly the same experience with other excercise classes that my body wasn't used to. It's just DOM's. They get better as your muscles get used to new stimulus. Eat some protein after exercise to help recovery.

However no pain no gain, so you do have to keep upping the excercise/ tempo etc etc

Anyway whatever you do, just make sure it's something you enjoy.

Ps they are right about the diet ;(

(why does unhealthy food taste soooo good?!)

boxing is supposed to be great as it is both cardio and strength training! But as someone else mentioned concentrate on your diet! Weightloss is 70% diet 30% exercise.

Btw where are you doing Boxing? I've wanted to do it for ages but got turned down as I don't intend to compete

Hey girls, sorry was in sunny espagne last week and wasn't checking in here much. The boxing is in a vec on clogher road in
Crumlin. It's €6 per class and I think you can pay as you go. Would love to see some more girls, last time I ended up boxing with some guy which was sort of embarrassing!
