Sony Experia keeps running out of memory

My Sony Experia Ray is limited to the mount of Apps I can have, it's regularly giving me messages that I am out of virtual memory.

Curious to know is this the same for all Smartpones? It's irritating I have to keep deleting my least used apps to make space

its not the same for all phones
it varys by phone
higher spec photos tend to have more memory and some of the newer ones too

I'm a complete technophobe, so don't know if there's some way of transferring stuff from the card to the phone or vice versa - or if that would even solve the problem.

I have a ton of photos in Picasa, but am afraid of my life that if I delete them off the phone, I'll delete them from everywhere else as well.....

I've a HTC Nexus One, fwiw.

Android, you're doing it wrong.

Virtual Memory = RAM

Too many apps, thats storage.

Steps:
Remove bloatware(antivirus, anything that runs needlessly in the background, wasting CPU cycles and RAM)
Get a decent size SD card(16GB are cheap as chips now)
Move apps that you can to SD, freeing internal memory(storage).

NB: Custom roms tend to release a load of space on the phone memory too, so worth considering(get a nerdy friend to install for ya).

I actually have a 16gb memory card and I also do everything you mention above.

I have an Xperia X8 and a similar problem.
In "manage applications" sort by size and see where you can save most space. For instance, Skype is 10 times the size of Opera Mini.

Isn't the X8 stuck on 2.1 and you can't move stuff to the SD card on 2.1 ?

Only out of the box.

You can use Link2SD to move apps to SD card.

Nobody should still have their X8 on stock.

Last time I looked there wasn't an app for 2.1

Tell that for O2 about the X8. They also have a bunch of phones for sale on 2.3.4 which won't be getting 4.0 ICS aswell. Very poor.
