i'm going back to college (full-time course) this september. till now i've been working part-time (less than 30 hours a week) but never bothered to get any social welfare help like jobseeker allowance as my husband was working full-time and we had enough money to survive.

now my husband is working only 3 or 4 days a week, im starting my course in 3 months and obviously i will be able to work only weekends. i don't qualify for BTEA as I wasn't on dole and i don't qualify for any grants because i wasn't resident in the state for 3 years out of 5. i mean i was in and out the state for few months and after that moved for good to my husband (2,5 year now).

is there any other social welfare help we could get in this situation? I suppose we would be struggling a big time with the money we would earn, especially that I will be travelling to my college like 25km one way. Don't know what to do, really...

    HELP!!!!!!! :(

    The short answer is no.

Is it possible to defer the course?
Sign on for JSA now, and apply for BTEA next year?

You say you are going "Back to College". Do you already hold a qualification?
Are you aware that to qualify for BTEA you have to be going for something higher than what you already hold?

When I was going back to college last year a lady in the local citizens information office told me about a hardship grant that it may be possible to apply for.I have no idea what the criteria are for qualifying but you should call them up and see if you stand a chance.
Failing that your best bet is to defer for the year and sign on for JA in the meantime. It is sad but it is often the only way for some people to get a third level education.
The first time I was in college at 17/18 I worked two jobs, nearly took on a third but my employer to be decided it wasn't worth my while considering the amount i would be paying in tax.I was so exhausted from working that I ended up missing quite a few classes.Tutors hated me.Not knowing the full story, they decided that it was sheer laziness and it got the stage where I chose not to turn up because I knew that they would berate me for it.Now I am on BTEA and, without the distractions of two jobs, college is going wonderfully.
