Bought a BMW from Merlin had a problem with the sensors on the front windscreen brought it back four times costing me time off work and inconvieneance. Merlin told me they got it tested in FrankKeans BMW but could find no problem but that they would get back to me shortly. When i did go back yet again they had close down i then went to FrankKeansBMW who informed me my car was never in with them Merlin had been lying to me all the time it was then found out that the Windscreen was not BMW but a cheap generic put in by Merlin. They are members of S.I.M.I which they promote to assure people that they can buy with confidence from them but in my case this has not happened. I have complained to them and S.I.M.I for a well know company to operate like this and for an organisation like S.I.M.I to allow this to happen is appaling they are nothing more than back street cowboy dealers. Merlin need to step forward they know they did wrong and sort out the problem.

Is Merlin Motor City not gone? I thought they just had the auctions now.

    Sensors on the windscreen?

The place on the longmile, is it not closed? The auction place is a seperate company I think.

BMW's love sensors you may get used to it and there not cheap.

Beat me to it. Cannot emphasise that enough, in an auction it's almost always SOLD AS SEEN.

Buying from an auction is not for the faint hearted, you need your wits about you, know what your'e buying etc.

Last time I was out that neck of the city, motor city was very much shut and has been for a while ;)

Actually wait... you bought this car over a year ago now. And even got a printout from a BMW dealer over a year ago telling you what needed to be done, but you went to advance pitstop instead and got them to service it and now you're complaining about Merlin? gtfo....

Bit late to be raising this issue now by the looks of it... I can't fully understand it though, rain sensors?

I thought it was going to be life and death stuff, isn't that what the stalks are for, turning them on and off???

The S.I.M.I. are nothing more than a group made up of car dealers representing themselves with their own interests at hand. All a dealer needs to do to have their sticker over their front door is pay the annual membership fees. They very rarely rule against their own and any dealer being a member would carry very little weight with me when buying from them.

To be honest I'm not sure what satisfaction you can/will get at this stage if the garage you dealt with are gone.

Yeah but he must have bought it from the dealership because the auction house wouldn't have entertained him in the first place when he went back with it.

But if you have automatic wipers, the intermittant doesnt work without the sensor. It would be annoying.

The diagnostic from BMW showed no problem with the intermittant wiper it will not work on a generic windscreen. This only came to lightin December, altough Merlin Motor City has ceased trading they were and continue to be members of S.I.M.I. I feel they are obliged to sort it out properly.

How can you feel that Merlon are liable, when the diagnostic from BMW didn't raise any issue with the sensor when you had it test last year??

Merlin use their membership of S.I.M.I to great effect promoting it to assure customer confidence, you are right about S.I.M.I they are toothless. In my opinion they a nothing more than cowboys...its an expensive lesson but they are not getting away with it..

Merlin fitted the windscreen they knew all along i was with the mechanic four times about it they could not get it to work he even lied to me that FrankKeans BMW checked it as it is proven it was not in with them. The sensors do work but not on the cheap windscreen.

I'm not being funny, but how do you expect a company that is no longer trading to sort this out exactly?

Is it working intermittently? In my experience, the rain sensing wiper on the E90 is a ball of sh1t anyway.

The Directors of Merlin Motor City who were in S.I M.I continue to be Directors of Merlin Goup and members of S.I.M.I. They signed up to S.I.M.I's ' standards of excellance' and that s what i am going after they have a responsability. They continue to promote S.I.M.I on their sites which i object to..

Ah, there's your problem, you need a glass fitter for windscreens not a mechanic...

Think op has an x5. I had the E53. Wipers weren't great. Even on most sensitive setting they wouldn't come on when it was drizzling. My current XC90 works much better

Merlin could not even honour a year's warranty never mind a lifetime they are cowboys not to be trusted. They are not a reputable dealership in fact they give the motoring industry a bad name and thats why i have asked S.I.M.I to expel them from their organisation and have also informed the Minister for Transport.

Even if what you are saying is correct, you have your terminology wrong, WERE cowboys, WERE not reputable, they GAVE the motoring industry a bad name.

They are gone. Kaputt, no more. I also think you should move on.

What I have stated is correct and proven by FrankKeans BMW even their HR Manager in Nass apologised over it...
They are still there as directors and members of S.I.M.I ...I appreciate what you are saying but they will be exposed for their wrong doing.

Well they won't really to be honest. They're gone and even if they were still trading they wouldn't be kicked out of the SIMI because of a windscreen. As for the minister for transport well...no. You may as well write to Santa Clause if you think Leo will chase the directors of a company that's ceased trading all over a dodgey windscreen.

Do you know how PLC's work?

Merlin would be the holding company. Merlin Motor City (MMC) would be a separate company within the Merlin group. You'll have no joy going after any of the directors of Merlin as they aren't responsible for MMC as that's ceased trading. Same as Merlin Auctions have nothing to do with MMC

Just ask some of the thousands of contractors who've been screwed over, for much more that you, by developers closing PLCs down. Sometimes the same directors opened new companies from the same premises, but as they are a different PLC they have no obligations from the old company.

It's not right, but it won't change.

I really think you should picket Dail Eireann about this. Maybe talk to Joe? You could try getting in contact with Declan Ganley too while you're at it. I'm pretty sure he needs a new axe to grind.

Seriously, stop pissing into the wind, dry your pants and realise your problem will not be solved. It's a piddly problem at best. If I was that worried about it and had windscreen cover I would have a new screen by now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,968 ✭✭✭blindside88

I know you want Merlin to replace the windscreen but it doesnt look like it's going to happen, why not have it done on your insurance, windscreen cover usually covets upto 1500 from an approved repairer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 426 ✭✭Shane Fitz

Is it possible that Merlin had no knowledge of the spurious (sp?) windscreen, and bought it themselves, and sold it on in complete innocence?
Could the original owner have had it replaced?
I'm assuming you asked ALL relevant questions about it's history, crashes etc when buying?

Also, how come the problem only came to light before Christmas? We live in Ireland ffs, surely you had reason to use the wipers between time of purchase and the problem arising?

OP, I can't see any way in which you are entitled to anything. Even morally (which doesn't come into it).
