Iron Ball Flight

    Hey guys,

Bought a set of Cobra s9s a few years ago and they are great.
Regular graphite shaft and ball comes off high

I got fitted for my driver and a stiff shaft was recommended.
Also changed my 3 wood to stiff and that has worked well.

As I have gotten better I would like a more pentrating ball flight with my irons so I guess my question is should I be looking at my technique or my iron shafts ?

    thanks

If you have gotten to the stage where you have a consistent ball flight then I would say you would benefit from custom equipment to really dial in on the finer points

I know this is a tough one to answer but ball park would you have any idea if I was able to just change the shafts what price range(s) I am looking at for 5-Pw ?

I would agree, some of the rifle shafts have a more penetrating lower flight, even in regular flex or 5.5 flex

Assuming they were right for me they have them here
    http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/acatalog/Royal_Precision_Golf_Shafts.html

Not much change from 200 euro and that does not include fitting.
So I guess I need to find out if they are right for me.

Any got any experience of the fitting in Birr Golf Shop as that is closest to me ?
Or the Pro Shop in Douglas, Cork is another one I could get to from work ?

At that price plus fitting plus grips your talking 400 yo yo plus. I don't know what your clubs are worth but unless they are forged heads worth 500 + then it wouldn't really make sense to replace them.
You could pick up a really good second hand set for this price with good shafts and you would still be left with your clubs instead of a load of spare graphite shafts.

Good point. Need to try some out before I go any further though

    Hi Alx,
I was in the same boat as you earlier this year.I had been custom fit in carton with all stiff shafts but had got my hands on burner 2.0 reg shaft. So i bought KBS tour stiff shafts and cut them and fitted them myself and all in i think it cost me about €130.Dont know if you would be able to do it but it saved me a fair bit!!

    Pentrating ball flight ?
Out of interest do you know your driver SS just for comparison ?

Where did you get the shafts ?
    How hard to fit ?

Apologies for all the questions but that is very interesting :D

The biggest problem you would have is pulling the graphite shafts from the S9s. Graphite shafts would be difficult to remove without the right equipment (steel are a lot easier to pull). To remove the shafts you would have to heat the head, the S9 irons have a lot of plastic inserts and I would be worried about damaging them when heating up the head.

I had the S9 irons until last year and changed for the same reason, ballflight was too high. I have changed shafts in irons myself before but didn't want to try it on the S9s because of the reasons mentioned.
You might be better off looking out for a set of S9 irons with stiff shafts, you would save yourself a lot of trouble and if you sell your own clubs it would probably be cheaper (there was a set up on Golfbidder the last time I looked;)).

After changing to irons with stiffer shafts and less weight in the sole I haven't noticed a huge change in ballflight, it's more to do with technique (in my case anyway).

As in your technique causes them to go too high ?
Have you addressed this and if so how ?

    thanks,

Cheers but offer accepted it seems
Anyway I'm loathe to go changing everything without being sure it'll help

    thanks,

Trying to address it, but not with much success so far.
I have a habit of "flipping" at the ball. My divot is usually directly under the ball.
Look at the pros and you will see that when they hit an iron the bottom of their divot is about 6 inches ahead of the ball.

So I am trying to do two things - get a shallower swing with the top of the shaft ahead of the ball at impact.

Sorry for the late reply alx.
The ball fight is more penetrating alright and my swing speed with the driver is about 105 as far as i can remember.I bought the shafts off a guy in London genuine shafts with the code etched on them but e-mailed Kbs to be sure.I them removed all my old shafts with a heat gun and just ordered new ferrules from the bay.Used s 2 part epoxy to set the new one trimmed for length and regriped. The tip trimming guide is on the kbs website.
