    If you've let it go to the point that you have a grinding noise then you need disks as well as pads.

    The warning (if it has it and if the last person bothered to put in the cables) happens well before you get metal on metal.

    There are two types of warnings, one is a sensor which puts on a light on the dash(presumably your van doesn't have this) and the other is a little metal clip which causes a squeak when the pads are low.

    A grinding noise means that you have worn comletely through the pad and the metal backing is now damaging the disk.
