    Hi All,
Just wondering if I'm the only one but does any other women here have for lack of a better word a "crush" on another female, not a physical crush but just someone you really admire?
For me it has to be Imelda May-big fan of her music but it's not just that, any interview I ever seen of her she just so normal, warm, downright funny and down to earth and she's got his laugh that you can't help but smile/laugh along.Caught a snippet of an interview she done on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast show this morning and it just put a big stupid grin on my face!!

So ladies,am I alone in this??

You're certainly not alone. Sexual attraction is not the only type of attraction. Here's a comic that I think is great and illustrates well some different types of feelings of attraction that people experience (click for source):

    typesofattraction.jpg

Personally I feel all the above for various different people regardless of their gender, but everyone's different. There are probably other different forms not illustrated in the cartoon too, but I thought it was good for opening the door to thinking about crushes and such in more than just a "OMG I wanna jump your bones," sort of way.

    Totally get the girlcrush thing.

There are a few girls I have total Squishes on - they're admirable, funny, strong, intelligent and beautiful people who brighten up my life and make things more interesting.

Doesn't mean, as DK said, that I want to jump their bones.

love that comic Das Kitty, and it's cool that the final panel is clearly Sherlock :p

Deffo! I have a massive crush on the likes of Beyoncé. She is so clever and talented and hot. And then closer to home, my dance teacher. I am 100% straight (not even kissed a girl) but I idolise them or something.

At last a diagnosis, thanks Das Kitty!! Well it's official-I've a squish on Imelda May:):)

Of course you're not alone! I was just thinking about this earlier.

Absolute girl crush on Natalie Portman.
She's just SO pretty, and even as a kid, she was a brilliant actress. Sigh..haha

    Major squish on Zooey Deschanel....
    Although Its partly fringe envy

Went to see Snow White and the Hunstman recently, and realised I was crushing over Kirsten Stewart just as much as the mighty fine specimen that is Chis Hemsworth....

OMG me too. I'm so unbelievably squishing on Beyoncé, I think my favourite thing about her is her relationship with Jay-Z, given the world we live in (baby pictures/wedding pictures being sold for millions) I love the fact that with the exception of their lavish wealth they seem like really nice down to earth private people.

One of my other secret squishes is Britney Spears, I think it's amazing that she is recovering so well from mental health issues, and although she went through a very public meltdown and lost her kids etc. I think she is very commendable for trying to get her life back together. I think anyone who publicly struggles with mental health issues (or even privately) and trys to put their life together is amazing.

I found her super hot in this film - crush, squish blah de blah :D I swear I could watch that film over and over just to see her (albeit never changing) face...sigh...

Would also echo the above girl crushes on Beyonce - she is amazing. Sexy without being trashy, talented, smart, and comes across as a genuinely lovely person.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,698 ✭✭✭✭Princess Peach

I get them on girls I know. It's not so much that I fancy them, I just think they are amazing, and beautiful. I love looking at pictures of them, and knowing everything about their life.

Not sure if its "girl crush" though or just my low self esteem manifesting :-/ My psychologist said I wasn't going about this in a healthy way anyway.

Scarlett Johansson is amazing :D She is definitely my girl crush

My girl squish is Emma Stone. She's pretty (and a red head like me), I love her dress sense and she comes across well in interviews! I want her to play me in the movie of my life :P

Emma Stone. I just love, love, love her. Not sure if it's a 'squish' as much as I want to have her babies :)

Love her hair, her skin, her eyes, her freckles, her voice, and she seems like a fun girl to hang out with.

God I sound like a creep. Fuck it, she's gorgeous!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,691 ✭✭✭Lia_lia

Zooey Deschanel annoys the fuck outta me...I just don't get it!

Squish is such a funny word!

I can't really say I have "girl crush" on anyone as they are usually genuine crushes...I have wayyyy more female celeb crushes than male ones :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 350 ✭✭ICANN

I get loads of girl crushes, they tend to similar because they're people I want to be like or admire for some reason. It changes a lot though, last week it was Natalie Portman and this week it's the girl who plays Robin in How I Met Your Mother.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭Vinta81

    Britney Spears/Sophia Bush.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,411 ✭✭✭✭woodchuck

    +1 for Natalie Portman!

Also Jessica Alba... well, back when she embraced her curves anyway

Think it's because they're both mixed ethnicity; gives them a very unique look. And they both come across as very strong 'kick ass' types without loosing their femininity :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,028 ✭✭✭✭--LOS--

I can't think of anyone that it's not a physical thing as well tbh but then again I can comfortably say I like girls. You seem a bit quick to say it's not a physical thing but I would assume that it was in a lot of cases.

But not everyone feels the same way as you. Some people feel affinity and appreciation of other people that isn't sexual. Some people are entirely asexual. There is no right or wrong way to feel.

Personally the types of attraction I've felt over the years have been ever changing. There was a time I wasn't sexually attracted to anyone of either gender, but I felt strong attraction in a non-sexual way to people. Now I'm sexually attracted to a lot of people regardless of their gender, and it could change again. I could become exclusively sexually attracted to houseplants next for all I know.

Wow seems I'm not alone in obessing about Zooey Deschanel. I will watch anything she is in, I love the sound of her voice and her style. I just think she is amazing!

Also +1 on Natile Portman, me and my bf love her, she is so pretty and seems like a really nice person, and she gets mega bonus points for being jewish!

Like --Los-- I cant say that my attraction to women isnt physical so I am admitting to having Lusted after pretty much everyone on The L Word at one time or another. Thats a bit of an embarrassment as I know its a Hollywood TV series with very few real Lesbians in the cast and I didnt even like the charachters when it started.

    340x.jpg

I have been following this thread out of interest to maybe learn something about human and specifically female sexuality.
It seems it is freeing for some posters to be able to talk about their attractions to other women without it being defined as a sexual attraction that would lead to a physical expression if the opportunity allowed.
Expanding our understanding of the range and diversity of human sexuality is a good thing and I would imagine it is very frustrating to have your feelings constantly defined as sexual when that is not accurate.
However I would also like to say that it is ok if the feelings are sexual or develop into sexual feelings. I feel the need to say this because I believe there is considerable pressure still, for women to distance themselves from actual lesbianism or serious sexual relationships with another woman (as in not just for male entertainment) and that society is still homophobic despite homosexuality being legal.
So I think that society tends to both be homophobic and to sexualise people and situations inapprorpriately. It would be good if we could allow for both possibilities to exist without anxiety or at the cost of the other side feeling denied.

    Great post Ambersky!

I think there's always a big rush to define people's sexuality (whether it be gay, straight, bi). Like, I would be defined as straight, I'm married to a man and have no intention of sleeping with anyone other than him for the foreseeable future. But I am physically attracted to people of both genders, it really depends on the person themselves and not what's in their underwear.

Then again I could change again (as I have in the past) so I'm not going to say I have any specific label when it comes to sexuality.

I see there is a difference when I talk about attractive people, if I say a guy is hot, that's fine. But if I say a woman is sexy, there are sometimes uncomfortable looks and a swift change of subject. Not that I give a feck, but it's interesting to see how each thing is treated differently. As a married person it's more allowable for me to express an attraction to other men, than it is for me to say it about women.

Or maybe it's plain old homophobia. :pac:

I would say I am a raging heterosexual, however I have always had a thing for Kate Winslet. I just LOVE her. I don't know if it's sexual attraction or what, but I'm pretty sure If she leaned in to kiss me, I would kiss back :0 I think she is also an amazing actress, and that probably adds to the attraction too.

[male interloper] Funny enough P I'd have a "squish" as defined by Das Kitty's graphic on Ms Winslet too*. Had one for KD Lang back in the day too. Very cool woman IMHO. Not a sexual thing with either of them. I've had similar(and it was mutual) for a couple of female mates and again it wasn't a sexual thing. As Ambersky said in her brill post "society tends to both be homophobic and to sexualise people and situations inappropriately" and that can go all sorts of ways, not just the obvious. [/male interloper]

*clearly we both carry the terrible burden of good taste :D

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

No, she really dull and luvvy. Shudder.

Plus, she still harps on about her weight in every interview despite the fact that no-one cares about that anymore. I doubt interviewers are still asking her about that.

For me it's Kate Austen from Lost, she's attractive, tomboyish and daring, I definitely had a squish on her while watching. However, it's only her character I feel like that about. The actress (Evangeline Lilly), out of character does nothing for me though, especially as she's usually so glammed up. Kate in her rough and ready looks is so much better.

I'm going to make the most laidback, cool, funny, bad ass girl gang ever with Kat Dennings, Emma Stone, Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore, Christina Applegate and Juliette Lewis as the collective mother of our awesome new group.

God no, shes so annoying >.< Did you just watch the first couple of episodes and leave it there to think that :pac:

I can have total squishes for guys but not girls, completely crush free. I think that confuses people. I've huge admiration for male characters without having any kind of crushy-ness towards them. I follow F1, but have great admiration for some of the drivers. If a guy gets wind of it they assume I have a crush thing going on, it's not the case at all.

Vettel and Button are mah boys :)
