Swimming in the sea. Will do you wonders. It's free and will make you feel alive.

There is a home based workout thread there if you look it up.

In your circumstances, the best exercise is the one you love and look forward to doing.

If you dont have a bike, try buying a cheap one or borrow one and use it all the time in your daily life.

Swimming has already been mentioned. If you dont want to swim in the sea, Is there a local authority pool near you that is good value ?

I know you say you've never been great at running but I hear a lot of people say this. Its cheap and simple and the results are amazing. And for me personally its the best cure after a crappy day and a great place to sort out my head, absolutely luv it.

I also would have said swimming and cycling. Both are great for fitness, swimming like Zamboni said is weird how it makes you feel alive and cycling is a great way of covering large distances in short amount of time and great for getting out and seeing the country.

What about team sports like soccer, basketball, tag rugby or things like tennis etc? I find having a sport like these motivates you to train and helps you get in shape while you're having fun and are good craic to which can be important for sticking with something. Gluck getting started!

Try and give running a second chance...

Running is the best. Not only does it make you fitter and give you that satisfying endorphin rush afterwards but the motion and the impacts firm up your whole body. Running will tone you in places you never connected to running.

And the thing is that it does actually take some practice and some adjustment time to get into it. Dont be put off if it feels odd and unnatural at first.

Its not uncommon at all to feel aches and pains and pick up some minor injuries when you start out and that can be off putting. But you rest and those issues will go away as you get more into it.

If you suffer from depression, exercise is one of the best things you can do. Exercise releases endorphins which affect our mood.

I come home from work feeling Like crap and all I want is my iPad, tv and a bottle of wine. If I go to the gym/class/run/walk I don't want any of these things when I get home. Protein shake then bed and wake up feeling great.:p

Do a class/group excercise, you push yourself more and it's sociable. You'd be surprised how much you enjoy excercise once you start. Do a zumba or bootcamp type thing for the group support, a PT is great if you are really self conscious.

Diet is hard to control but very important. I find that I eat better on my exercise days than weekends.
    O
( weekends don't count in my ideal world)
