Whats the point of them exactly?

Porto apparently had a €100m+ one in Hulks contract but he goes for a third of that. I'm wondering; why bother?

Aren't they required by law in some countries?

Why bother with contracts at all really. Rooney is the first example I thought of, signed a new contract with Everton and left a year later. Players can come and go as they please irrespective of contracts. Not worth the paper they're written on.

Yeah sure Ronaldo's only cost £80m to break. I could go on and on about how wrong that statement is.

Nowadays contract just dictate who has the strongest position in negotiations

I'd argue the contract meant a lot. The new contract put Everton in a far stronger negotiating position. Do you think they'd have gotten bids of £20m from Newcastle and £25.6m from United from a player who wanted to move on if he didn't have three years contract left?
