2nd satellite receiver powers off when connected, resolved by pure chance

Purchased a quad LNB to hook up a 2nd satellite box on a mobile site.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sky-Quad-adapter-older-dishes/dp/B003MQG2HE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1338987233&sr=8-2

First I installed the new LNB & connected the existing cable to P1 (output 1 of 4).
Checked existing box & signal was happy at 92% max, big improvement on single LNB's 67%.
I connected the box receiver in 2nd mobile to P3 (skipping P2 so more room for fingers), once I connected the cable to the box it cut out/powered down/all lights off/dead.
I moved the output from P3 to P2 & hey presto, everything worked perfect.

Is there some electrical reason that I shorted out the box or can I put it down to voodoo/witchcraft ?.

You shouldnt be working on a quad with ne boxes powered up as u could short it out, and especially in wet weather...as there is 12-18volts coming up the cable and could give u a slight shock more of a tickle but to the untrained it could startle them enough to fall off a ladder .....unplug everything and stay safe.

The box shut-down because it saw a short circuit. When you moved the plug to the other outlet you must have cleared the fault. Be very careful of stray strands of the outer mesh touching the inner conductor.

You both could be on to something, it was raining constantly while I was doing this.
I was using a dual cable for the 2nd box (future proofing), I only slit it down about 2 inches for the f-connector on one strand.
I pushed the redundant end of the dual cable into P4 for neatness then slid down the plastic cover.
I was bloody lucky then I didn't kill the box for good.

For some reason when I switched back to P2 I was in a hurry so I just left the redundant end outside the LNB.
Problem solved, it wasn't witchcraft, thanks folks.

That's not a good idea. The connection must be absolutely dry. Any moisture can have a bad effect in the future.

Good point, earlier this year the single LNB stopped working due to oxide on the end of the copper wire. Cutting it back about 1" & refitting the f connector did the trick.
