ABS Repair Costs.

    Hi,

Light came on in my 07 Focus for brakes. Garage says ABS gone and need to replace some sort of hydraulic thing (I haven't a clue obviously!). Anyway, quote is €400. I just had it serviced few weeks ago in same garage. Two questions: is €400 reasonable and should they have run diagnostic test as part of service and seen this?

    Thanks,
    Gumby.

Was the light on when you had the car serviced? Re the cost of the part, have you called a few other garages for prices? If not, do.

It sounds like the usual pressure sensor fault that afflicts the particular type of ABS unit fitted to your car.

To answer your question €400 is a reasonable price if it includes parts and labour. The part itself is €170 + VAT or thereabouts.

Was the light on at the time the garage did the service on the car?

Thanks all. The light was not on at time of service but came on about a week later (after the first long drive approx 170 miles).

On a slightly side-note, what is the point in a service if they don't run a diagnostic on the car? The 'all in' cost of service quoted before getting the car to the garage seems to cover precious little. Anything extra (including cleaning wiper blades in one case!) seems to be an additional charge. I even use a Ford garage and some of the extra costs are things that Ford say you should do once a year. So I bring my card for a service to a Ford garage and they quote me a price for a Ford service then they charge me extra for things that Ford say you should do at time of service. Feels a bit Ryanairish to me.

If the warning light hadn't come on before the car was serviced then there would be no fault recorded as the pressure sensor hadn't failed at that time. As soon as the sensor failure occurs the warning light comes on. Short of a crystal ball there is no diagnostic tool that can predict when a sensor failure is going to happen.

In any case I don't see what difference it would make whether you find out about the problem now or a few weeks ago. It doesn't change anything, it still has to be fixed and the cost hasn't changed in that time.
