Just out of curiosity.. What mean do IE RPU (Revenue Protection) staff have for identifying a persons true Name & Address to ascertain its not a duff one.

Do they have access to the Voter Register or the like?

I believe UK rail staff have access to this or the like for confirming alleged offender identities for issue of a penalty fare.

Just wondering about the Irish system.

Irish Rail staff use Tom's Directory which lists every property in the state and its registered owner

That is incorrect, they didn't have where I live.

They use some of the following...
    • Passport.
    • Driving Licence
    • School, College or Work ID.
    • Credit/Debit Cards.
    • Other cards to hand with your name/details on same.
    • Bills/letters/bank statements with your name and postal address on it.
    • Electoral Register.
    • Thoms Directory.
    • The good old Phone Book.
    • A land line phone number and a quick call to verify same.
While there are people who will give duff information (And a few who get away with it), the above list will cover virtually everybody and can tie you down handily enough. As it's an offence to not give up your details if asked, they have the right to and often will verify what you have given them.

You are under no legal obligation to provide anything beyond your name and address.

Under no circumstances are you required to provide any supporting ID or document unless it is a CIE/Student ID card which is required under the terms of the ticket

However, this being Ireland,we continue to attach great importance to the ability to "get away with it"....except,of course when you're a merchant banker....:D

So yea....Tell them nuttin !

Have you a link to a legislative basis for the spiel on Dublin bus' website. There's a lot of stuff on there I'd take with a grain of salt, like drivers knowing each and every stage boundary, or "real time passenger information"

Just, the Irish rail byelaws only allow train people detain you if they have reasonable grounds to believe a person has not been truthful

There is an entire section on the byelaws which are prefaced at the link below:
