Convert from triple to Compact

    Hi,
I built up a new bike earlier in the year and I ended up with a spare Shimano 105 5700 Compact chainset. I have a Specialized Secteur Elite with a fairly cheap & nasty triple chainset so I was thinking of converting to compact. My new bike is a compact so it would be more straightforward.

My question is do I need a new compact front derailleur? Will the existing rear derailleur work?
The current configuration is Triple 50-39-30 with a 12-27 cassette
The new config will be Compact 50-34 with the same 12-27 cassette.

Will my triple 105 5600 shifter work as a double?

Will I need to shorten the chain?

    Thanks!

I Have done this before without any problems it may take a bit of setting up especially with the limit screws on the front mech but it should work.
Rear mech should work no prob
Shifter will work if limit screws adjusted properly
You might have to take a link out of the chain but prob not

I did pretty much the same conversion as you with a 105 triple to a 105 compact set up.I did change the front mech to a double as most of the articles on the net suggested that it was an easier set up.I used the same chain and the same 105 front triple shifter(there is plenty of info on the net regarding the set up for the front shifter/front mech,it still took a couple of go's to get it right)I've had no problems since the conversion everything is running well.

If you decide against doing the change Donie, i'd be willing to purchase that 105 Compact Crank off you if you had an interest in selling.

Of course, you probably have it on the bike by now :)
