I was watching a World Triathlon event from Madrid on the TV over the weekend (I know, I know but it was pissing rain on Sunday!). Apart from a great result for Aileen Morrison I also noticed that everybody seemed to be riding what looked like pretty standard road bikes! I thought Tri bikes were normally like TT bikes but even more radical?

    Perhaps it was hilly.

ITU races like that one are draft-legal so TT/tri bikes are impractical / dangerous. Possibly illegal actually for all I know.

no tri questions allowed on cycling forum!!!!

For ITU the tri bars cannot extend out beyound the brake levers. For this race it was particularly hilly so most of the riders seemed to dispense with them altogether.

For non draft legal races the set ups can be very extreme. The ART forum will give you as much detail as you wish.
