For a TV that only accepts SCART then your laptop needs this S-Video port:

Otherwise you'll have to purchase an adapter, which aren't the cheapest.

S-Video doesn't carry audio, video only

Just get a HDMI cable and connect the laptop to the TV. You will then need to select the PC HDMI source on the telly. To have the sound travel through the HDMI (and not through laptop speakers) change the speaker output options in Windows from speakers to HDMI

If your TV doesn't have HDMI ports then it is not that simple, composite is analog wheras HDMI digital, you can't go from HDMI to Analog or vice versa. Something like this should do it, a bit pricey but thats the price you have to pay. Would getting a multimedia drive which takes an external hard drive with movies loaded on it and plays on the TV be a solution? Be cheaper and less hasstle in the long run. Something like WDTV

No difference really between Scart and Composite (Scart may be slightly clearer, although it would only be slight). Also you do no that Composite will not carry HD signals? So you will be viewing the movies etc in SD. If your TV has Component input (Has aditional colors Blue, Purple, Green from memory) it will do HD, so look for a hdmi to component adaptor

Yeah, it probably doesn't. Unfortunately going from HD->SD like this will have a severe effect on quality, especially smaller words will probably be very blurry on the big TV (possibly even unreadable),

What is the make and model # of the laptop? You should be able to find out the video card you have from Device Manager>display Adaptors :)

press the "Fn" key (bottom left beside control) and "F8" together to switch the outputs on most dell laptops

I think this is your video card, so try updating the drivers. Also see subways advice above re: FN key

if you have a console such as a PS3 or XBox 360 you could stream it through that

I've used HDMI out on a Intel HD chipset before and from memory had no issues. Only other advise I can give is to right click on a clear area of the desktop and click graphics properties. Play around with the settings in there. also I do know sometimes there is a "pc mode" setting on the tv, but generally you should see some picture. Also may be worth trying type "connect to a projector" into the start menu search, click on the result and play around with the different settings (such as duplicate), may be difficult if screen blanks though!

    Try Tversity

I used that on with an old laptop to the Xbox for streaming channels, movies and sports with little to no problems.

Fairly straight forward to set up, as well.

When you connect your hdmi cable to your TV make sure the laptop is not turned on, otherwise it might not recognise the external display properly. Once its all connected then power on your laptop.
