    - Learn off all advertising techniques (use of colour, celebrity endorsement, text, slogan, logo etc.)

    - Identify the targe audience (teenagers 12-1, adults 30-50 etc.)

    - Know wheat a tabloid and a broadsheet are and know the differences between them.

    - Know puns, alliteration, slang etc.
    - When you get the questions, read through them, look at the ads and answer the one you are most comfortable with.

    - Look at the ad and circle all the features of the ad - if you see a Nike logo circle it and write "slogan". You will get all of the thoughts out of your head and you can concentrate on forming the actual answer.

Other than that, go through your exam papers and do 3 Media Studies question. You have around 30 minutes for this so time yourself doing it - you have roughly 15 minutes per question (providing its a two mark answer with 15 points)

And if you have time, do a little brainstorm before you answer. My teacher recommended that we do this one first in case we run out of time at the and we rush it. He recommended we do it

    1st - Media Studies
    2nd - Personal Writing
    3rd - Functional Writing
    4th - Reading

    But it's up to you.

DON'T do Personal Writing last! It is worth 70 marks, if you do it last you will be tired and mightnt give it your all + if you only have 30 minutes left at the end, you have lost alot of marks as you couldnt get it finished. Reading is better for last as it is the easiest section.

    This was taken from http://www.juniorcerttips.com/JuniorCertEnglish.html
Media Studies: This section is the last Section in Junior Cert English Paper 1 and it is worth 40 marks. You will usually have a choice between two different questions. Questions vary greatly from year to year. e.g For years before 2011 you were usually asked to analyse a poster/brochure and answer questions on it but in 2011 you were asked to describe a news story that happened in the last 12 months and give advantages and disadvantages of following a news story on different forms of media. The exact wording was
Look at the information about newsworthiness that appears on Page 3 of Paper X whichaccompanies this examination paper.(a) Think of a major news story which has captured your attention in the last twelve months.Briefly identify the story. Explain how this story meets any three of the criteria fornewsworthiness set out in the information on Paper X. (20)(b) Major news stories are generally covered across a variety of media. Outline the advantages and disadvantages of following a news story using at least twoof the media listed below:„h newspapers„h radio„h television„h internet

For the first question you could write about any news story that happened in the last twelve months that meets three criteria for news worthiness. These are (1)Timing, (2)Significance, (3)Proximety, (4)Prominence and (5)Human interest

Popular stories were The earthquake in Japan, The american operation that killed Osama Bin Laden, The queens visit to Ireland and the visit of American President Barack Obama. Each of these stories could fit into Timing because all these stories were reported very quickly by news stations. All these events were significant to certain people. Proximety is relevant to the visits of the president and the queen. Prominence is relevant to everything other than the earthquake and human interest is relevant to all the stories. There is no harm in using an example to justify your selection of the criteria e.g The earthquake is perfect for the criteria of human interest because the whole evnt evoked huge emotional responses from people. Most of these responses were sad but there were also some stories of survival. A 75 year old grandmother, her grandson and their dog survived for 10 days before they were pulled from the rubble.

Part (b) is more common than part (a). You are required to give advantages and dis-advantages of following a news story on different mediums. The following are advantages and disadvantages of each medium

Newspapers: Advantage: They are very easy to get a hold of as they are printed everyday. Newspapers are not overly expensive and you don't have to be rich to buy them.

Dis-advantage: Newspapers are always reporting "yesterdays news". Newspapers are printed daily but they can not give up to date information at all time like other media can.

Radio: Advantage: When listening to a radio you can be doing more than one thing at the same time. E.g Most cars have radios and people find it very easy to listen and drive at the same time.

Dis-advantage: There is no visual aspect to radio as there is with other media. This forces you to create the images yourself and this could take away from the quality of the radio show.

Television:Advantage: Television gives you images which makes it easier to understand the messages being conveyed as we are visually driven.

Dis-advantage: (1) Of course to follow a news story on television you must have a television and these are often very expensive.

(2)The cost of producing a Television show is much more than say a radio show. Therefore producers might cut costs on presenters or reporters and the quality of story coul be worse as a result.

Internet: Advantage: The internet provides us with up to date information and as soon as something is put on the internet it is visible to everyone.

Disadvantage: To access the internet you must have a computer or a laptop and these are very expensive.(usually between 400 and 500 euro)

Check out their website for some other English notes (or any subject really) it's quite good.

My teacher said that she's predicting something on social media this year, be it in the Reading or the Media Studies.
