Looking for info; New Mavic Ksyrium SLs

    Hi All, This is my first post so hopefully I am posting to the correct location

    I bought a new set of Mavis Kysirium SLs a few days ago, they are an upgrade to a set of Aksium Race wheels that I have for about 4 years. Beacuse of weather etc. I have only put up about 40km on the Ksyriums.

    My first spin on the new wheels they felt a bit heavy on the flat, but did notice a positive difference for the hills and inclines.

    When I spin the wheels on the Ksyriums they do not spin for as long as my old Aksiums.

    My question is; is there a break-in period for the new wheels. Should I see the Ksyriums "loosen up" and spin more freely over time, or sould they be spinning as freely as the old Aksiums when they are just out of the box.

    Any info/advice appreciated.

    sounds like the cones may be too tight. You should have gotten a cone tool (small plastic spanner-shaped tool) with the wheels. Use this to loosen the cones a little, then spin again.

    I'd suggest carrying that tool with you for your first few spins just to be on the safe side.

    A more common problem is that the cones loosen after that 'bedding-in' period. Its unusual that they'd be overly tight.

    Thanks elduggo, I gave the cone a half turn with the tool and seems to have helped. Don't want to do any more than this for the moment. I'll see how it feels on the road after this adjustment.

    As an aside, the cone had tightened to its max, in that the cone tool was not able to turn clockwise when i tried it out.

    Should you not have been loosening rather than tightening the cones?

    C3PO, was just checking to see how tight they were out of curiosity, I loosened (anti-clockwise) by a half turn, hopefully this will do the trick. Although tough to get out and test on the road in this weather!

    Just to close this out, I spent a bit of time adjusting hub tension, QR tension, flipping the wheel etc. One last thing I did was cut the rubber tags (from injection mould?) off the walls of the tyres. My final adjustment was -
    - Hub tension backed off a 1/4 turn from max
    - QR tension significantly less than I would have had with other wheels (but not unsafe)
    - Tyres with rubber bits cut off (don't know if this really makes a difference)
    While the wheels will not spin forever, they do spin for as long as my previous set, which was where I wanted to get them.
