    Hi folks. Gearbox trouble!

My gearbox packed in, she's popping out of 1st gear. The mechanic reckons it would just be cheaper to replace the whole box. He wants E300 for labour.

I sourced a few boxes, one crowd in Naas want E2ooo for a reconditioned one, a scrapyard in Roscommon wants E750 for a second-hand one and they want my old one aswell, and a lad breaking a landcruiser not too far away from me wants E150 for his, but I'd just be taking a chance on whether its genuine or not.

    What would you's do?

The one for 150 sounds good, I doubt it can be anything other than genuine.
or do you mean if it is OK and not banjaxed?
I'd pull the drain plug and check for metal bits just in case.
The oil doesn't discolour in them easily unless they are well scuppered.

UPDATE - I rang around a few main-dealers and a few gearbox places. They all have the same story - whats happening to mine is a known fault in 90 series Landcruiser boxes, it happens to them all. So the only job is a repair / reconditioned box. The one for E150 could be grand for a year, and then I'd be back to square 1. Tracked down a place in Dublin who'll repair my own box for E500. He says he sees one a week.

we had a primera diesel that used to slip out of first gear on over run, started happening at about 80k miles

went on to clock another 170 k miles and never did anything with box

What is the fault? and what is the fix?
Is it only boxes that haven't had the oil changed regularly?
I have over 260k miles on mine and not a bother, mind you I do change the oil every 6 mths.

The fault is that there's an aluminum fork that selects the gears, and its prone to wear. It wears just enough to NOT fully engage first gear, but its fine for the rest. Its caused by the driver keeping his hand in the gearstick while driving (which I'm a whoore for, feckin rattling drives me mad). The fix is just a replacement fork. They'll obviously do a few other handy bits while the box is out. The crowd is called MisterGearbox,MisterClutch. They're in Finglas in dublin, anyone ever heard of them?

Ah maybe thats why mine is still good, I never leave my hand on the gear stick.
The rattling is caused by the rubber seperating the inside rod from the actual black tapered steel outer of the gear lever.
The fix is to drill a hole in the black outer and fill with tigerseal or similar.
Cheap fix, much cheaper than a new selector fork.
