Drop Off Point???

    I was in the gym the other day training with a foreign lad who in all fairness knows his stuff and is in good shape. I was on my 3rd set of an exercise and could lift no more than 3 reps with the weight so dropped it by a few kg.
    He said when I finished that I should not have dropped the weight I should of just stopped when I couldn't finish the set,his reasoning was that I am letting my body think I can't lift the heavier weight. I would of thought by burning my muscle out I would benefit more. He mentioned you need to know your 'Drop Off Point'. Something about if you can't get 4 or more reps walk away. Would you guys (and girls) agree with this?

    It depends on what you were attempting to do. What was the intended rep range. What were the goals etc.

    I do 5 x 5 sets a lot. I'll ramp up to a top set, if its my first time attempting that weight, I may only get 3 reps. If so, I leave it there and move on. Next week I'll try again hopefully getting 4 or 5 reps. In that situation, I don't see the point in dropping the weight and adding a lighter set. But that may not be the case if my training had different goals and a different structure.
