hi all just wondering with the lower milk prices how many new entrants will now bother getting in ?

was at a disscussion group wednesday last and teagasc was saying not as many applied for the free quota as previous years wonder was this because of prices dropping as it seems fashion if 1 thing is going good this year we all go do it next year.

Hey, applied and plans progressing every day to be in milk next spring, fingers crossed on the new entrants quote, hope what you heard on less applying is correct as more chance for me getting some!!!

When I was deciding on going down the milk route I was not basing my decision on last years milk price as that would have been stupid but from the sound of what you are hearing alot of the potential new entrants were, changing to dairy is not meant to be done on a whim because even keeping set up costs to a minimum it is still a relatively large committment and not somethpng you should/can be backing out of after a few years.

According to the farming independent a couple of weeks back there was 265 applications under all categories. Is this your first year to apply?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 378 ✭✭KCTK

Ya first year applying, I wonder what the split was between people with no quota and those with some already, know that the amount who will be allocated quota under the no current quota scheme is 50 maximum.

Indications I was hearing from Teagasc and independant consultants early in the year was for a much higher number than 265, guess the pressure on milk prices this spring made some guys (and gals) reconsider.

Was searching for something else and came across this answer to a Dail question on it http://debates.oireachtas.ie/dail/2012/05/22/00341.asp

Called the Milk Quota section in the Department today also to see and they have the same story, hopefully you are right and that it is all sorted earlier, but....

Last year the closing date for applications was a month earlier and results were released in early July. So I would say it won't be till August. It leaves time very tight alright.

kevthegaff interested in your situation as a young lad up the rd from me applied and bought quota in april in the trading scheme he got 27000 ltrs or something along that line, he applied for this free quota but if he doesnt get it what are his options for starting in feb, how did you build up your quota and how many cows did you start with and what you milking today

bulk tank repair man told me they had a lot of new tanks for new entrants put on hold after the recent price cuts.

i started with 30-40 cows, bought quota at 26c/litre in the beginning. luckily i wasnt caught with a superlevy bill so far! im upto 85 cows with 49k gallon quota, still gambling on no superlevy(smaller than 77k gallon producers get more temp lease, flexi milk. im also still getting small amounts in the quota trading scheme from the priority pool. low cost system but i still have a lot of loans from quota, stock and set up costs. If i were him id apply for temp lease, priority and start small and build up(hope that helps)

Cheers kev, much quota you start out with in year 1, 2, 3, 4, and you find it hard to get temp leasing!

I think you'll only get called to an interview if there is something they don't understand in your plan, say they are very rare. Haven't seen anything since on when announcement will be made but sure they way thing work in this country early August will probably be the first week of September....

Jez there is always some little thing they will try pulling you up on, date of publishing a piece of paper makes a difference (take it you have it completed!). You have a few gallons dont you so least you can supply before April, way this disaster of a year is going and from reports I hear from farmers down here re drying off early etc I dont think the country will be over quota come end of March, unless we get a big turn around and a really early spring again.
