It's a bit dangerous commenting on a particular car in a public forum. The owner could sue the site if he felt his car had received unfair comments. I would not be surprised if one of the mods stepped in here!

In general Mazdas are well-built reliable cars. There are some problems with diesel engines but that does not apply here. You will have to look at this particular car and make your own assessment.

I don't know what year you are looking for, but I have 2004 petrol.
Car is very well built, and doesn't seem to suffer of any mechanical problems even though mine is already 8 years old and 110k miles. Still has factory suspension, exhaust, etc...
All what was done mechanically with the car so far, was brake pads and discs, oil, filters, fluids, etc...
Clutch was also done recently at 105k miles. It was still going well enough but probably wouldn't do another 20k miles, and while I had a chance to do it cheaply, I availed of the offer.
Brake calipers have tendency to seize, and need to be exchanged. On my car AFAIK 2 or 3 were already exchanged.
So generally mechanically it's a really great car.

It's great to drive either, as suspension works great on bendy and bumpy roads, while still providing good comfort in the cities and on motorways.
Engine (2.0 petrol) has enough power, and provides acceleration of below 10seconds to 100km/h.

However there is one big drawback of those mazdas.
They suffer a lot of rust.
Mine has most of rear wheel arches rusted. Underbody is even worse in some parts. Rear suspension mounting is getting worse and worse every day. NCT tester on last test said it's going to get dangerous at some stage and it might fail next nct in 2 years because of this if I don't do anything.
Plenty of screws and nuts are rusted so fixing anything might be difficult as it's hard to take anything off this car.
Front shock upper mounts are also rusted.

But generally I'm very happy with the car, even though I'm not sure how long more I'll be able to keep it roadworthy considering the rust.

I'd be thinking your one isn't typical of a 2004 6 if the underbody corrosion is as advanced to attract comments from the NCT folks.

Interesting. I've had my 05 in a coastal area for several years and no rust at all. Luck of the draw I suppose. The calipers however.... Losing track of how many its gone through. They seem to freeze shut easily in cold weather. My major irritation with it is that it seems to have very poor fuel efficiency even accounting for it being a 1.8 (about 20mpg). Of course its getting on a bit, and I'm not easy on the accelerator.

    20mpg.
Average for my 2 litre mazda is about 8l/100km (35mpg) and I'm not easy on accelerator either.
Maybe one of your calipers is stuck and you are braking all the time when driving or sth.

Hi OP. I bought a Mazda 6 TS2 2008 9 months ago. 2 litre diesel. I love the car and have zero complaints. It came in from England with a full Mazda dealership service history. Its the most powerful car i have ever driven, (im only driving 2 years or so) and i got my first speeding ticket after a few months :):) I did go a test drive a few Mazda 6's first before i bought one. I was going to buy an Audi but much preferred the Mazda when i drove it

I have had a 2008 Mazda 6 2.0 TDI Ex and I love it. The problems with the Mazda diesels have been sorted since around 2005/6 so don't go for a diesel before that.
