Structural Engineer for new house?

    Hi,
    We are hoping to sign contracts for a new house soon. Our solicitor has advised to get a structural engineer before signing. But it's our call so I am looking for advise as we hope to sign soon and this would push things out.

    The builder has already provided reports testing for pyrite and all is ok.

    In addition, we will of course be doing a snag before closing.

    Any advice appreciated?

    So your legal representation has advised you To carry out Due diligence, on probably the biggest purchase of your life, by employing a professional to check the building over? You're in a rush, and trust the person selling you the house, and you feel confident in your unqualified assessment of the building condition, regulation conpliance and standard?

    Best of luck with whatever you decide. Btw have you been following the priory hall et al media coverage?

    Firstly, don't be pushed into a quick sale by your builder. Secondly, this all sounds highly suspicious. Testing for pyrite and interpretation of test results is a highly specialist field. This type of work is usually carried out by specialist engineers, geologists and geotechnical experts. You should double check the credentials of your builder before trusting his engineering judgement. Lastly, you should get an independent inspection (with a report in writing) carried out by a suitably qualified professional before buying the property.

    Is it a QS or Structural Engineer who usually does this?
