Hey, today I went driving from 3 PM until 8 PM (just got home) and well I kind of got used to hold brake pedal rather than always putting into handbrake and off, is that ok? will examiner deduct points for that? Or should I learn back to safe?

AFAIK you should always put the handbrake on when you come to a complete stop. All starts should be like hill starts even if on the relatively flat.

I do but handbrake on hill starts, but well when being in traffic it seems much easier for me to use brake pedal than pulling handbrake 50 times

It certainly is easier and that's why I do it but if it's for the hour or however long a test is these days best to stick to best practice.

I also think there's safety issues. Better to have handbrake engaged incase someone rear ends you.

Have look through old posts. The recent thread about 'Gear or handbrake first?' applies here.

I got a grade 2 fault on a test when stopped at traffic lights because I didn't apply the handbrake. My instructor used to say if you're stopped for more than 3 seconds, use the handbrake.

A 5hr driving lesson! Is that normal?
To answer your question, you should apply the handbrake at all times when you come to a complete stop. Get back into the habit or you will slip up during your test and it could be the difference between a pass and a fail.

Busted. Dopey shyte drivers with pre-licensing bad habits cause accidents by standing on the brake pedal at traffic-lights and stop-signs, blinding the driver in the car behind with the high-intensity brake lights. Inconsiderate, unintelligent, unthinking idiots, they should be put off the roads permanently. Rear fog-lights are probably on too to compound the problem.

Put off the roads for using the foot brake instead of the hand brake? I can think of much worse driving habits.

In fairness to the OP, they asked for advice so they don't get into a bad habit.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but brake lights are not blinding.

I'm a firm believer in holding down the brake pedal (I have the handbrake applied too!) at a set of traffic lights until at least someone drives up and stops behind me. You know, in case they weren't paying full attention to the road, the brake lights may grab their attention.

No its not really ok. Dont know if you would lose points for it but you should have your handbreak on when stopped at lights.

See - they're crawling out from under rocks and out of the woodwork now. It's an ill-mannered, inconsiderate habit designed to inconvenience and impede other road-users.

The fact that you just ignored the rest of my post (the bit indicating that you could grab someone's attention and prevent them rearing you) shows your ignorance of safety

And btw, I'n not arguing with you anymore. I've made my point, and I'm sorry for hijacking the OP's thread.

My advice: Use the handbreak at traffic lights always.

I'm not arguing with anyone, I'm just pointing out what the ignorant practise of holding your foot on the brake does to other road-users.

Cathalog stated that he/she only does it until someone stops behind them. So if you're getting blinded by brake lights in the few seconds it takes for you to approach a car and stop, you may need to get your eyesight tested ;)

I bet in your head you think you are a good driver when in real life you are aggressive inconsiderate and intimidating. always on your horn just waiting for an inexperienced driver to put a foot wrong.
As regards the handbrake my instructor gave me a rhyme to remember " if the pause becomes a wait, we use the hand-brake " i did pull him up on the fact that it didnt really ryhme but he pretended not to hear me.

In addition to using the handbrake, it would be correct to use the footbrake in dark or foggy conditions or if you are stopped awkwardly on a bend. It should be released when the next driver's sees you.

Not an issue during day light hours anyway unless your glaring directly at the driver's lights while having a tantrum.

So far you've deduced I have defective eyesight, dodgy driving habits, suffer from anger problems and don't know how to use the horn and lights on my car correctly. That's pretty good going guys. Do you all work on the psychic phone lines flogging expensive horoscopes to innocents?

I'm perfectly willing to let my driving record, my experience and knowledge speak for themselves. I can afford to, unlike some posters here, who based on their posts in other threads don't know the basic ROTR.

well you don't have to be psychic to see you've anger issues, you're first post effectively calls the OP a dopey shyte driver and an Inconsiderate, unintelligent, unthinking idiot, and all they did was ask a question. It's there in the forum title they're learning to drive.

I made no personal attacks on individuals and did not resort to name-calling specific posters. If I had I would expect to rightly reprimanded by the mods for disrespect or ad hominem attacks. You need to read the specifics I write and not associate me with your inaccurate personal interpretations.

It's a public forum (unless I'm told different by the mods) and learning about anything is a life-long endeavour for all of us.

Just look at what you've learned?

No your post did not name call a specific poster. Your use of the plural would indicate that it was a reply to all previous posters. Is insulting more than one person at a time less offensive? at the very least, you'd have to admit, if you post a response on any thread unless you've directed it at an individual it's not unreasonable to assume it's directed towards the OP otherwise where is it directed??

Anyway if I'm wrong to whom were you directing your dopey shyte drivers and unintelligent, unthinking idiots comments?

In relation to the forum title comment you've missed my point which was not that it's a forum only for those learning to drive but that the OP and others are learning to drive and don't know it all yet. As you say yourself it's a life long endeavour. So comments along the lines Of "they should be put off the road permanently" are a little harsh, especially when taken in the context of people still learning to drive.

Well screw that, today I got my handbrake fixed and now I have it, I am using it only when facing uphill and facing downhill, in other cases I mostly am in traffic requiring to move every few seconds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,515 ✭✭✭arleitiss

weird, am I the only one who on purpose today stood and looked at stop lights checking if they blind you? :D because they didnt' blind me whatsoever.

Seriously out of order and shows total disrespect to learner drivers

Cut out the bickering, there's no need for it at all - you can debate the post but don't attack the poster. Report the post if you have a problem with it.

I've deleted a lot of posts - stay on topic, please.
