How would I go about writing a letter in my higher Irish exam (paper 2) about a disco or a party or that you moved to a new house or got a new principal? Help I never learned this in school! Also, what titles mainly come up on the eacthra. I'll have my opening and closing paragraphs learned off by tonight but I just want to know what I can expect to write in the middle.

What I'm doing is I'm learning off every single type that may come up like Gaeltacht, Turas Thar Lear, San Ionad Campala (that's what I've learned so far for the letter) gonna do the same with the eacthtra except I'll do more topics. Then pros tomorrow and I'm done Irish studying :)

The letter in general is easy enough, just make sure to mention all the points given. Keep it simple and you shouldn't have a problem

disco/party= say you went there. how you felt. the atmosphere. you met your friend. You danced. Possible fight?- Leading to a timpiste maybe?

New house= easy! where it is, then describe it, list of rooms, favorite room, why, gardens, etc

Prinicipal - you got a new one. his/her name. Good/bad/mean/friendly etc. new school rules maybe

Honestly just keep it simple, and make sure you know the opening & closing perfectly, and you'll do fine! ;)

You just gave me some great ideas for them that I couldn't think of before lol thanks so much! I'll just make the letters for each of them by myself :)

Also LawlessBoy, I can see the picture, thanks for posting it I'll just use that for the new principal one! :D

Wait, should I learn samples for the letter? my teacher said that once we know an opening & closing, we'd be grand?

You need openings and closing for them yes, but it shouldn't be more then "Beatha agus Slainte!" and then a sentence or two to get it going. We wore given sample letters, but told to use them as guidelines. They are to the top standard but of course if everyone learns the same sample letter the examiners are going to be strict on marks.

As i said i attend a Gaelscoil and just use the sample letters for ideas rather then learning them to copy down in the test.;)

Yeah it's just that our teacher gave us really long opening & closings ;)
So considering she never mentioned anything about sample answers, grammatically correct basic irish should suffice, I presume.

    Yeah, i wouldve imagined so.

Ill have two more sample letters up in a minute for anyone thats wants them. One being a formal and the other another informal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭LawlessBoy

Heres the other two that i have:

    Sample B Formal Letter #2
Writing to your friend telling him/her about the country you are in.
    2012-06-03215254.jpg

    Sample C Informal letter.
About writing to a magazine company about an extract you read.
    2012-06-03215321.jpg

In the last paragraph the word midding is "alt". It should read "níos mó alt cosúil leis sin i do nuachtáin,dar liomsa".

For the party/disco can I use timpiste at the end? Like I slipped on a spilled drink and sprained my ankle?

Im sure you could if it asked for an event that happened or if you just wanted to add it in yourself:)
