Changing the Password on Your Router

I can't remember what the password is on my router and I have a new computer to connect to the network. When I log into the router it wants to know the old password before I set a new one.

I know I can go and reset the router itself and that will put it back to a default password- but eh how am I supposed to know what that is? Its it something like admin?

Sorry for the lack of knowledge on my part.

depending on the router, defaults can be admin/admin, admin/blank pw, admin/1234, admin/password etc.

Thanks Nick- so basically it's not likely to be something I can't figure out fairly quickly?

I'm not on Eircom thankfully. UPC and it's the infamous Cisco box.

Leave it blank and click ok
    Then set your new password

It may be written on the router (mine is, though it's not the UPC cisco one).

Try Admin for user name and blank entry for the password (need to factory reset first if was changed previously)

Got it folks. The password I had thought was correct was from a router I had used years ago.... silly me. Thank you very much for your fantastic help. If there's something I can help you with at some point in time, please let me know.
