Kies/Windows 7 doesn't recognise Samsung Europa

I am trying to upgrade the firmware of Samsung Europa. I installed Kies and then plugged in my phone.

Kies will not recognise it (it just says "Connect a device to use all the Kies' features") and Windows is giving me the "USB Device not recognised" error.

Troubleshooting the connection error in Kies makes no difference, and USB Debugging is switched off (Settings -> Applications -> Development).
I am running the latest version of Kies, and have tried restarting the computer, unplugging-replugging etc., nothing appears to help.

Has anyone come across this before? How should I fix it so that Kies will recognise the phone?

Many people have come across this before and it's normal - kies just doesn't work.

You could try redownloading the drivers, think it's an option under one of the header menus. If that fails, try a fresh install, if no joy, try a different PC. Best option of all: Don't use Kies, there is nothing that you need it for, and as stated above, it's rubbish (mostly because of the issue you're having, but also because it's an unnecessarily large program that constantly requires updating, and is very slow)

Just re-install Samsung drivers and it will work.

And also there is no need to use Kies - maybe except installing ClockWorkRecovery on it.

but there is easiest way to install it -

    Thanks for the answers!

That Cyanogen thing looks good, but is it risky to install, is there a risk of bricking the phone? Also doesn't rooting the phone involve a USB connection, which would be a problem in this case as not even Windows recognises the USB connection?

Fwiw I had Cyanogenmod on my Europa and it worked great (much better than stock ROM, plus its Gingerbread). Once you flash clockworkmod correctly (I used Odin) you can just drop the cyanogenmod installer onto SD card, reboot into cwm recovery, do a full wipe and then install cyanogenmod

I am trying to upgrade the firmware of Samsung Europa. I installed Kies and then plugged in my phone.

Think that Samsung will not be releasing any more upgrades after 2.2.

The only option then is to install unofficial firmware.

Succeeded in installing CM9 (Android 4.0.4) by following the above link posted by somebody_else. It is very laggy and the camera is not working. Nice to see ICS on it though.

Just installed CM7 (Android 2.3.7) and as yoyo pointed out is is quite good, snappy and everything seems to be working ok.

The phone will need to bee rooted before installing any alternative firmware and the only way I could do that was via SuperOneClick and for that I needed drivers (this is where OP seems to be caught). There are probably other ways of getting the drivers, but Kies worked for me (win7 32bit) and updated the drivers.

Instead touchwiz I was using the launcher pro interface. Turned out that if I wanted to connect to KIES I had to switch back to the touchwiz interface and then connect the USB.

Managed to extract phone drivers from my pc via Driver Magician Lite. OP, feel free to PM me if you've no luck and will send them over to you.

Install the Android SDK. Its big, but includes all the drivers ever needed :p

Thanks for all the answers! I'm going to try upgrade it on Wednesday so I'll update the thread then! There is another PC in the house so I can try that one as well.

So would you recommend I upgrade it to CM7, or to CM9 (ICS)? At the moment I have 2.2, but I am finding the phone to get very slow and sluggish (it wasn't the case when I bought it, last August), so rather than restore to factory settings I might just upgrade it to a new firmware to see if it helps!

Use CM7 which is Gingerbread, the ICS port is an Alpha so not suited for daily use. I used CM7 on mine for ages, no problems and very fast. Mum has my phone now and even for her I loaded on CM7 (had to flash back to stock ROM to get unlock code/unlock it), shes having no issues either.

Thank you! Makes perfect sense, I'll let you all know how I get on! :)

Any issues let me know, know a good bit about that phone from tinkering with it :) . Just make sure to backup your texts/call logs if you want (i use this). Going from Froyo to Gingerbread will need a datawipe, so you will loose all apps etc (stuff like pics/music on sd card) will be preserved. Also have your Google account sync all your contacts.
Then follow a guide on how to flash the CM7 firmware with clockworkmod. Once you ensure to wipe the cache, data, dalvik cache etc the chances of problems are very slim
. Its like a completely new phone on CM7 :)

Sorry, this week was hectic so only getting round to this today!

Just to clarify something, I'm unsure about the initial step.

If I use Odin to flash ClockWorkRecovery, does the phone need to be rooted? Also, do you need to purchase Odin from the Play Store, there's no free equivalent?

Edit: I can't update via SuperOneClick, as the phone isn't being recognised by USB - I'm not sure how to work about this problem! I'm not sure it's even a driver issue, it looks more like a problem with the port on my phone as I've tried various USB ports on the computer - I'll try another computer soon and see if I have the same result!

Doesn't work either after trying another PC and a laptop! Same error each time 'USB Device isn't recognised' in Windows XP/7.

Is there any method of rooting that doesn't involve a USB connection?

Odin is free. Nice guide with download links here. You also don't need to root if you use Odin through USB and flash CWM through download mode (power off phone, then hold down volume down, center button and power on/off for 10 seconds, release and "Download" with a yellow android alert symbol should appear). Just make sure before flashing CWM you have the latest CM7 install file on the SD card, as well as the google apps package.
Also if you receive the USB not recognised error, you need to install the phones driver (SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe). You do not (and should not) use Kies so make sure that is shut down and not open.
Then when CWM opens up do the following:
    Wipe Data/Factory Reset
    Wipe Cache
    Advanced>Wipe Dalvik Cache
    Press "back" button once
    Install update from SD Card
    Choose Zip from SD Card
Then pick the CM7 setup package and apply it.
When applied wait 10 seconds, then repeat the above procedure to install the google apps
Then in clockworkmod choose"reboot system now" (sometimes this appears twice) then Cyanogenmod should boot :)
Edit: here is what your odin should look like (I don't have a phone connected, but you get the idea)

Thanks a million for the reply, yoyo, I really appreciate the help that everyone has given me!

I'm still running into a bit of difficulty though. I have downloaded all the files, and copied them to the SD card. However, my computer still says "USB Not Recognised" when I plug the phone in, even in the Download mode. I have tried uninstalling Kies/drivers and reinstall drivers, but nothing is helping! Odin doesn't recognise that there is a phone connected.

(I should note, that anytime I plugged my phone normally into the USB, it does begin to charge, so the cable itself works)

This is beginning to look a bit impossible!

Are you using the official Samsung cable? Seems a bit odd to me it wouldn't detect, even when not recognised,
Edit: Another thing to try, try factory resetting the phone though Settings>Privacy and see if it helps :)

Yes, it's definitely the cable that came with the phone! I tried pointing manually to the drivers, but it always says that the drivers are in fact up to date (it thinks it is called 'Unknown Device', and thus doesn't know that it should be using Samsung drivers).

I tried a Factory Reset there, the same problem occurs!
On a slightly brighter note, the phone is much more snappy and responsive than it was prior to the factory reset, which was the point of my effort really, but I'd like to upgrade the firmware if possible!

Thanks again, this is a strange one!

Try completely removing kies, do a full uninstall. Next download the Samsung drivers here (I uploaded this installer, and this driver works for me). Install the drivers then put the phone in, see if it helps. Btw when connecting the phone to the machine never choose kies mode.

Thanks again! I tried that, but still no joy :(

I never get an option to connect in Kies mode or otherwise - should I be? All that happens is, when I plug the cable in, my phone lights up and begins charging, and my computer says "USB Device Not Recognised" - my phone makes no other acknowledgment that it's connected.

Thats very weird... One thing you could try is cleaning the MicroUSB port, see here on how to do it. Also if you have access to another microUSB cable try it! It could be something as simple as a faulty cable! :)

Thanks again! Cleaning it made no difference, however.

I will try and hunt for another cable - the few MicroUSB cables I could find are different shapes and don't fit, I may have to ask a friend who has a Samsung phone! The current cable does charge the phone though, so I have my suspicions that it is the phone that's somehow faulty.

Thanks for all the help and links though, if I ever manage to sort this USB thing out I'll fly through the actual upgrading! :)

Yeah it does sound to me like a port/cable issue. On 2.1 it was possible to root via an app, but on 2.2 and later 2.1 updates (iirc) you need to use adb which needs usb connection to phone. I never had any issues with my Europa like that, so I do think there is something faulty that is causing it, especially if it fails to recognise even in download mode. May be no harm trying on a different machine to just install the Samsung drivers I linked to above, connecting it in download mode and see what happens. Also (if it's a desktop) try connecting the phone to the rear ports, sometimes the front ports can be dodgy.
Finally all microusb cables are the same size, mini usb ones are similar but much larger and narrower (used by some cameras and older phones) :) ,

Ok, thanks again for the answer!

I found another MicroUSB cable (belonging to my brother's Nokia phone, probably should have tried that at first before looking through camera and satnav cables :P). When I connect it, the computer recognises it and my phone asks me to connect via Kies or UMS Mode! :D

Excellent result, I'll try the CWM as soon as possible!

Thanks a million for all the help. I was sure it was the phone, not the cable that was the problem but I'm glad to see that I'm wrong! :D

Brilliant stuff, UMS mode is what ya want, but if you have Odin, CWM and CM7 and Gapps dled follow my previous instructions, don't even need to use it through the phone just boot into download mode, flash CWM and away ya go :)

Thanks a million again, your instructions made it very easy, yoyo!

In CyanogenMod 7 now, looks great - I'll have fun playing around with this! :)
