Airline policy to UK without passport ?

Looks like I may have to travel to the UK in the next day or so (from Cork)- but I don't have a passport.

I'm fairly sure a passport is not required by law, but some/all airlines now insist on it...?

Can anyone tell me Ryanair and/or Aer Lingus's position on this? (please, I'd like firsthand knowledge if possible rather than "this is the law" -we all know airlines can be a law unto themselves)

Ryanair need a passport but AerLingus don't mind. However you could need proof of nationality on your return, so a birth cert? Immigration in Cork caught me with this when I tried to use a regular ID instead of passport.

Thanks for that. I assume my driving license will do if I go via Aer Lingus then.

A drivers licence with photo is perfectly acceptable with Aer Lingus.
