    specially, around galway ?

    ... or not really ?

i've dropped the game a few years ago and sold pretty much all my cards... kept only a few that i hope will be valuable a few years from now...

... anyways, i miss the drafts and sealed-deck (probably my favorite format) and was wondering if there was anyone still into it ?

indeed-- got the (kinda) human's deck but most likely I'll be playing reanimator (my favourite type of combo) or naya-pod (just because it looks so cool) and RDW/Ponza on FNM constructed

Look for Dungeons and Donuts Facebook page (on my iPhone and too lazy to go around copying / pasting links) -- there's a regular FNM with a couple other tournaments -- decent enough athmosphere and a few people are thinking about takin the next season a bit more seriously -- some of us will be flying to attend tournaments abroad

you'll always find good people to play against across any format you favor

what level / focus have you on your game now ?

I literally just started... But I really like the game and want to actually keep playing it! I only have a starter pack with a few other cards thrown in... So for me it would just be to actually play a game or two and not so much for tournaments!

well, there are a few casual players around -- i remember seeing a few people last friday just calling over to the shop and playing a few games

i believe the following link will direct you to the galway's magic group:

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/387511944633129/

people usually shout when attending to the store -- and even if you just drop in you'll get someone to play a few matches with -- friday, after lunch time through the evening, is when a lot of stuff happens -- call over to see for yourself

you didn't ask for my advice but, since its for free, i'll give it anyways -- make sure you protect your cards with sleeves and keep the ones you're not using stored in a box or pocket sleeve binder -- you will want to keep your valuable cards in mint condition for future trades -- i saw some new players last friday with a good euros on the table just damaging the cards -- breaks my heart :D

Thanks! Not boasting or anything but for a new player I'm actually quite good... I beat my bf 9/10 times and he's the best out of his friends... So I might try tournament just to see what it's like...

And yea my bf is sending me a box to store the cards in... I'm kind of ocd about keeping everything in good condition so don't worry about me!!

Also... Friday day/nights... Bit of a random time to play :P Most people would rather be going out and drinking :P But yea I might call over and see what's going on! Although I won't know anyone there!

    Thanks for the help :)

Also I have another question... What is the different between standard, modern and draft?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 234 ✭✭luisspellcast

no deck is unbeatable -- and if you find a good matchup for your deck you'll win a lot of games -- if you're happy with your game knowledge (both cards and rules) i suggest you do try the tournaments

about the cards -- ocd is the way to go

this is FNM (friday night magic) http://www.wizards.com/Magic/tcg/events.aspx?x=events/magic/fnm

it's the poker night for geeks -- i don't drink much -- and i'd play magic rather than drinking -- i'd consider a much better use of my time (and money)

go here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_formats) for the full format explanation -- in short, standard is all the expansions released since september last --- there's a block being released every year (along with a basic expansion) -- modern has more expansions included so the complexity level raises a bit

most FNM format is draft -- you sit across against your opponents and each get 3 boosters -- draft starts with opening your first booster, selecting a card and passing the remaining to your left opponent -- as the cards run out, you open your second booster and pass it to the right -- then your 3rd booster you pass to the left again -- with the 45 cards you end up, you try to build a deck of 40 cards (usually 17 lands / 23 spells and or creatures) -- it's a great way to acquire cards and learn how to build decks / play and whatnot -- easy to learn and hard to master (i'm doing this for far too long and i'm still **** at it)

    hope this helps --

I know that no deck is unbeatable but I surprised my bf by actually having some skill at this game without ever playing before lol safe to say he was not impressed :P

Yea draft sounds kind of complicated... But sure I'll learn!

Thanks for the help! It's a good thing I'm a super geek then isn't it!

Head to GamersWorld on Jervis St, just south of the Jervis Luas stop. -Link on Wizards Store locator-

I know they run FNM each week (usually Sealed Draft though) but should be enough people around to organise a mini comp some evenings. Just drop in and ask, I'm sure the guys working there will steer ya right.

There is also GamersHub if your out by Maynooth, never been but seem to run a wide selection of events each Friday -Link to Store Locator-
