Vw passat faults

I bought a new VW passat in August 2006 thinking that they were a good car. Since then the exaust recycling valve was replaced at 2 years. Now at 5yrs 9 months I am facing ignition switch replacement, flywheel clutch replalcement and bushes in the rear suspension. This is a car that was not abused and has 96,000 Km(60,000 Mls) on it. Rather than sticking to VWs service periods I had it serviced at intervals of 10,000 Km. I am posting to make others aware of the problems.

I'm thinking that you got out light. Flywheel is a given on any modern diesel. A couple of egr valves, some bushes and an ignition switch is not terrible. These cars are known to suffer many more issues than you are experienced, specially early versions.

I've said it before about people not researching before spending their money.

The early passat B6's(05-06) are widely known to suffer many problems, as has been said, you've gotten off lightly so far.

To be fair, he bought new in 06 and that car was only out since Mid 05 so it wouldnt have been so widely known that they were troublesome at that time. At that stage, vw would have been taking care of everything and telling all around them that they had never seen such a fault before etc.

My apologies, I missed the bit where he bought it new. I had a new one in 06 too(not by choice) and all I could see where lots of expensive things just waiting to go wrong. I also found its interior fit an finish, especially the dash inlays, terrible. Only had it for a year and a half but the wife still got left stranded in a shopping center when the handbrake wouldn't disengauge:rolleyes:

I must have gotten off lightly with my 06 (also second owner) so...

    - Flywheel went but as above, that's a given for any modern diesel
    - Injectors replaced just as a failure was indicated on #2 (2.0 TDI engine) but covered under recent recall

Other than that though, it's just been standard wear and tear.. tyres, timing belt, suspension bits and so on... not cheap no, but 220,000 km on the clock and still going strong. Runs perfectly

Serviced every 3/4 months in a main dealer though.

The only non wear and tear item I see there is the ignition switch. I would assume that the exhaust problem was done under warranty.

Thanks Justbored, I did not mention that the brake pads were replaced and the brake button works 80% of the time.

Muppetcheck, No the exaust was not done under warrenty the Main dealer would not entertain it. Said it WAS wear and tear.

Thinking of buying an 06 Passat. What are the "known" problems you're talking about? I've had two Passats supplied as work cars and been pretty pleased. Now, with a new job, I'm going to have to buy something myself.
Any other suggestions besides the Passat?

    Hi Phototom,
Advice is to stay away from VW Passat 05--06 models. Nice looking car BUT.
My faults were Exaust recycling valve, ignition switch , brake switch, Flywheel clutch and rear suspension bushes all in 96,000 Km (60,000 Mls)

The Gas thing is , if you had of bought this same car not new but from a

secondhand car dealer everybody would be calling him a criminal and a chancer for selling a car with problems, while vw get off scot free.

Then again the manufacturers don't build them to last , so people have to go and buy new one's.
Kia's 7 year warranty would be handy in this case.

I bought a modern diesel car,i drove it for 6 years i replaced a couple of wear and tear items,i am disappointed.............

On the bushes for instance, what kind of roads do you drive? you could probably get 150k out of them on motorways and good town roads, but if you drive bad roads or don't slow down for speed bumps....

Did the brake light switch break you? It's hardly a big complaining point now is it,but it does make your list longer lol

I have a friend who is a mechanic in a kia garage,do you really think Kia will give you a new flywheel and clutch under their warranty? :)

Modern cars are built have parts replaced - that's where the money is.Do you really think you would have done much better with any other modern diesel car from that year over the same time span?

I contacted KIA directly about this, the DMF (though not the clutch) is covered under their 7 year warranty.
