Damage to car overnight

Hey all, woke up this morning to find the whole side of my car torn to $h*t! The passenger side, parked out to the road, looks as it somone drove by too close and brought half my car with it! I only noticed because as I went to push out the mirror (which I always push in so it doesnt get damaged -HA!) it sounded like the window was open......turns out it was the frame of the door half off its hinges.
Any idea if theres any course of action? Thres red paint on my (black) door, so at least there was damage to their car, although it would be impossible not to with the amount of damage done to mine! Needless to say theres no note or anything! Ill report it to the local Garda station, not that it will do much good. Have to drive down the country this evening so need to pop over to my mechanic to make sure the damn door wont fall off in the process!
Sorry, Ive no idea about insurance etc - do I have any hope of them covering the damage? I just realised as I was driving to work that I never changed the address on my insurance policy when I moved a few weeks ago, so technically it wasnt parked outside my house......dunno if that matters at all?
    GRRRRRRRRRR so angry!

This happened me before, Have a look around the area as I found the car that crashed into mine around the corner parked up with my paint on his car.

The cops went and paid him a visit and thankfully the driver admitted crashing into my car and the gardai gave me his insurance details.

do you live in estate or main road?

If its an estate, i'd be looking around all of the houses in the area for a black car with a banged up drivers side

Depending on where you live, level of light when the accident happened you might want to talk to neighbours/local business about any CC TV

Thanks for replies folk. Its a main road, it is quite narrow but I was parked legally.
Ive been to the Garda Stn, onto the insurance, and car is in the garage now to make sure its safe to drive for the minute. Gda was v nice, she reported it as a road traffic accident which makes it more serious apparently, othrwise it would be classed as vandalism or something?? I dunoo.
Not sure abotu CCTV, have my doubts to be honest, Ill be taking a walk aroudn to check though, and Ill be checking all red cars in the area!

Have a chat with local body shops, they might get a visit from a red car with scratches on the side...

Some people are a bit luckier in terms of tracking down the other car

Hope you get it sorted, just a question re: parking, if your passenger side was damaged was the car parked 'facing' the flow of traffic?, I know that up here in NI there are regulations regarding which direction you can park at night because of having the rear reflectors visible to approaching traffic (not sure if it's just for unlit roads though).

Hey Carraig, hmmm, ya I was facing the traffic....not sure if its the same down here so maybe I was in the wrong? The garda didnt mention it though...maybe I need to brush up on my rules of the road? Anyone else know if this applies?

Also, just for the record (even though its highly irrelevant), cause clearly I didnt explain it properly, my car is black, the a$$hole's must have been red - red paint left on my balck door.

Good idea bout checking with the local body shops, will do that next week!

Hope u get sorted op. this is always something to report to the guards. I came out to my car in Balbriggan main street before to find the side taken off it. Was fuming, and went to the guards, but I didn't think it would do any good. Turns out they knew about it. A truck driver had done the damage, and a fella following him called the cops and followed him to lidl where he was delivering. Got it all sorted quick smart and I never would have had I not gone to the guards. The damage cost 3 grand to fix
Also proves there's still decent folk out there.

This happened me before and I flyered my neighbours, one of them called in saying he had seen the incident. Might be worth a shot.

Hey, just an update for anyone who may be interested; never caught anyone, the gardai I have to say, were very helpful though. Insurance company classed it as an economic write off and valued it at 3850 (of which 650 salvage). Now on the hunt for a replacement!
Thanks for all the advice above!
