Referendum - Is it just me, or were the god squad quiet this time around?

Unlike Lisbon I and II, I didn't hear anything from Coir, Youth Defence etc during this referendum campaign.

No mention from them of the risk of being aborted into a European Army and then conscripted by gay couples who are paid €1.84 an hour this time around, if the treaty is passed.

I know that these weren't issues during this referendum campaign, but then again, would that ever stop these god-squad types from trying to troll with nonrelevant issues? Don't think I saw any posters from them at all, but was there any involvement from them?

They're usually mildly entertaining, to me at least.

They probably don't have any money for posters after the last time, not to mention the Queen's visit. Probably all busy engaging in furious whataboutery over the child rape thing, too, so maybe they just don't have time.

Even they couldn't stretch the truth far enough on this treaty to talk about how this'll bring in abortions.

No doubt they were all busy preparing for the International Eucharistic Congress starting in ten days time:

Austerity is good for business in the snake-skin oil trade.

So they're laughing whatever way the vote goes.

Ye have little faith! Just claim that abortions centres are economic tax gold mines and hint at the idea that Europe will force them on us to help keep our books balanced.

A lack of oxygen is definitely required for most eucharistic congress attendees

    :)

Reminds me of one by the much-missed Linda Smith on the News Quiz a few years back:
    News Quiz wrote:
Clive Anderson (about Jeffrey Archer): Don't give him the oxygen of publicity!
Linda Smith: I'm not that happy with him having the oxygen of oxygen, actually.

Did anyone else notice a bible lying in their voting room or was it just my weird centre?

Yeah, a few of the the voting desks had a new testament on it. I thought there were a few Presbyterians working and were looking for something to pass the time.

It's seemingly for people to swear on if they don't have any approved ID when they arrive at the polling station.

If you can read this, you're too close!

    That's what I thought too.

Really? That seems a little dodgy. It could be anyone wandering in and just swearing on the bible. I guess it's more complicated than that, maybe involves the Garda they have there?

The old FF adage, "vote early, vote often" can be applied then?

And some people think we have separation of church and state in this country

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

The only people I've heard say it myself are FF voters. Usually with a knowing chuckle.

Voted in the nearest national school and I'm glad I'm not sending my boys to that one when they're old enough. Place was covered in big paintings of jebus cuddling kids....well creepy.

Brought the eldest with me though (2 1/5) and he put my yes vote into the box with great enthusiasm, coming back home to tell everyone about the "funny school" he just saw and the fact that "he" voted.

Just wondering though....is that technically against the rules to allow your child to put the slip into the counting box?

If thejournal's dubious polls are anything to go by, then yep, that seems about right.

Better than having priests do it, I suppose.

Probably not, so long as the voting staff clearly see that there's only one slip going in.

So it looks like a "yes".

Thank fek....was actually pretty worried there'd be a "no" with the amount of people that didn't vote.

I should have asked to swear on it and said: "you suck God".

Well about a year or so after Lisbon II, I was pissed drunk on my computer and decided to email Cóir and say that it was such a pity that what they said about the treaty was all a bunch of lies as I had been quite looking forward to all of them being pout down by the euthanasia gay European army with handbags made out of aborted foetuses and being paid the Latvian minimum wage of €1.84.

I reckon that email put them in their place and they decided to stay quiet. Go me.

Say what now? so could walk into a random polling station and pretend to be holy and get an extra free vote?

The treaty was pretty straight forward.. live within your means. Don't see what religion has to do with this. As Christ said give to Ceasar ..

I've worked at elections for a few years now and I've never had to use it. I think I'd rather send someone home to get ID than get them to take the oath.

They give a little bible with every ballot box for people to swear on but if I remember correctly, there is also a non religious oath that you could take either.

Yeah but the whole point is that they didn't render unto Caesar during Lisbon- a treaty almost as dry and boring as the latest one. For some reason, last time we had to be protected from those godless yorpeens with their 'bortions. This time, not so much.
