If I do a backup by either nandroid or titanium and then wipe/factory reset the phone, will I have to root the phone again in order to get cwm and superuser?

If I upgrade firmware can I flash the current rom I'm using back onto the phone if I want? It's litening rom 6.1?

flashing firmware will wipe your phone!
    do a nand backup 1st , then a titanium
put firmware on the sd card and flash it. ( be sure to rename it to PG86IMG)
just reboot phone then and you will have the latest radios etc and rom will be fine

If you restore the original ROM you'll need to re-root, but custom ROMs come rooted, regardless of datawipes

I don't understand this Nick? If i want to wipe and restore my current ROM, I'll have to re root, but if I want to wipe and flash a new rom, I don't??

Custom ROMs come rooted "out of the box" (I think the new Cyanogenmod will allow turning Root access on & off), stock official ROMs i.e: the Samsung or HTC etc. ROMs will be protected, so need root again to unlock. If you flash a new custom ROM, it will be rooted.
If you data wipe (i.e: Factory Reset) your current rom, you shouldn't loose root, even if its an official ROM I think
