Campy Athena shifters with Shimano 105 brakes? (for mudguard clearance)

I'm setting up a light tourer / audax-type bike and was intending to use a full set of Campagnolo Athena components.

The bike has full length mudguards (SKS chromoplastics) and a rear rack. This means that the rear Athena skeleton brake barely has clearance, and squeezes the mudguard on closing.

I also have a set of Shimano 105 dual pivot brakes, which work OK with the current mudguard & rack setup, so I'm hoping it would be OK to use the 105 brakes with the Campy Athena shifters.

I've read on the web that brakes don't have to be from the same manufacturer, but I'd be grateful to hear from anyone here with experience of this.

For the most part, brakes will work with any shifters (although there are some exceptions). But I think those brakes will work fine with Athena.

    Thanks for that.

A bit more cajoling has just about got the Athena brake to fit, though much more snugly than the 105 one. I'll give it a go for now, and I know can switch if it doesn't work.

Have you tried shaving a little off the sides of the guards? even a mil would go a long way...
