I had a summer job before, didn't fill out a form 12a (didn't know I was supposed to), didn't get taxed, only found out I should have filled one out when I went to fill out my grant form the next year. It was when I tried to get some forms on the PAYE website that I was told I was never on the system because I had never filled out the form.

So it's two years later, I got a new job, handed in my P45 from my old job, and then asked about my form 12a. The boss said that there was someone else who handles that stuff. So the next day they were in and I asked them and they said all they need is the P45, and that there's no need for me to fill out a 12a. I don't want to get into the same trouble I got into before when I didn't have it, so I just want to ask:

Is it possible that they are indeed handling all this for me?
Or should I push the issue and make sure I get a 12a handed in?

If you got a p45 from the old summer job of two years ago and Revenue do not have any record of it, you really should send parts 2 and three to your local paye section with a request that your record be updated. Provide details of your new employer at the same time on a form 12A (date started, employers PAYE registered number, how often paid and your PPS number)

I've already given the P45 in to my new employer. I've been looking for a job for a very long time, and now that I've finally found one, it's a far better job than I would have hoped for, and everyone who works there is extremely nice and helpful. I don't really want to push the issue again as I don't think it will get me anywhere and I don't want to seem pushy/rude to the woman I was talking to about it.

Is there no way that they could be dealing with this themselves or that maybe when they try to register me they'll realise I don't have tax credits set up and I'll be in a better position to argue my case then?

I know I sound horrifically passive, but this is one boat I really can't afford to rock.

I'm not sure what case you are referring to as I can't actually see much of an issue. If you never filled out a 12a for your very first employment, then Revenue most likely do not have a record for you at all. If this is your second job ever then there is most likely still no record of you on Revenues systems. It's in your own interst to get the record updated.
You or your employer could follow the above procedure as your new employer should not be using a P45 from two years ago anyway as its out of date.
At the end if the day, Revenue needs to be informed of all employments either by employers or employees so correct tax credit certs can issue.

Also just in case you are worried, your employment from two years ago has no bearing (for taxation purposes) on your new employment as they are separate tax years.

By case I meant that they seemed adamant they didn't need to give me a 12a form.

But it's sorted now as they asked me to call Revenue and when I did they got me set up in less than 2 mins, very helpful people over there! Thanks so much for your help too :)

Just a quick question to those of you in the know.

I work a 9 to 5 job but last month I started doing some online work and I need to invoice the company I do the work for every month.

How do I declare this type of income? Will form 12a be enough or is there some other form?

    Cheers

A form 12a has nothing to do with declaring non paye income. Depending on the level of income, its a form 12 tax return or form 11 tax return at the end of the tax year.

    Thanks for your help.

I went to download the form 12 on revenue but I could only find form 12 for 2011 there seems to be none for 2012.:confused::confused:

I should explain my situation a bit better. I started doing freelance SEO work last month. I sent my first invoice on the 01/10/12 for 180.00. I am still working a full-time day job and have done no other freelance work in my life. All I want to do is declare that one invoice.

    Thanks in advance,

A tax return covers the entire tax year so you have to wait until the end of the tax year to file a return. The present tax year ends 31 December, so the form 12 for 2012 will be available after that date. They are usually available from February.

By the way, since the income is so small, try emailing your local paye section, to see if they will include your additional income without the need for a return. They may be able to reduce your tax credits and rate band by the amount.
